Some of you may remember reading a poem I wrote in the week leading up to the final (I think it was posted under the thread "Poem for Damien". Well after he won I decided to rework it a little and here is the result. I gave Damien a copy of it today and he said he hadn't seen the first one but that Eileen had told him about it. I hope he has a chance to read the new one.
THE JOURNEY
It had been a magic journey from audition through to now
And soon it would be time for you to take your final bow
You stand there in the spotlight and thoughts race through your head
As you wait for the name of the winner to be read
“What am I doing here? Surely I can’t win
I’m just a simple Irish bloke with a cheeky Irish grin”
You look into the audience and you see your family there
You know you are so lucky to have special ones who care
You remember how it all began many months ago
You didn’t want to enter, were afraid that they’d say “No”
But your friends knew you could do it “Have a go” they cried
“You’ll be right as long as you have Eileen by your side”
So you gathered up your courage and you took yourself along
Even though you wondered if you really did belong
But when you sang your piece you blew them all away
With your beautiful falsetto and your quiet, charming way
It wasn’t long before you had a loyal sea of fans
For 7.30 Sunday night we made no other plans
We watched with anticipation each time you took the stage
And in your Idol story you wrote another page
Each week you sang your heart out for your chance at Idol fame
And if you didn't win it would be such a WICKED GAME
From MESSAGE TO MY GIRL to the beautiful SKY
It didn’t matter what you sang, you made our spirits fly
Each UNCHAINED MELODY left us wanting more
Your NESSUN DORMA was superb, it thrilled us to the core
WITH OR WITHOUT YOU there really was no choice
We simply couldn’t get enough of that amazing voice
And as the end grew nearer it was clearly plain to see
That you would make the final two, where you deserved to be
No done could deny that you hadn’t earned your place
You’d done your best and held yourself with dignity and grace
And now the time had come for our Idol to be crowned
This was to be your moment, your ultimate Touchdown!
It would be a CELEBRATION of all that you’d achieved
And when at last they called your name we’d all be so relieved
We'd been WAITING ON AN ANGEL and you'd finally come along
Surely it would be you who would sing the winner’s song
Our hearts were beating wildly, our arms and legs were crossed
(We didn’t want to think about what all those votes had cost)
When they finally read your name you could hear us scream and shout
We all cried HALLELUJAH as we cheered and danced about
We were CRYING tears of joy as we watched you hug your wife
And we hung on every word as you sang NIGHT OF MY LIFE
It was a fitting end to a wondrous fairytale
For we'd known all along you were NEVER MEANT TO FAIL
Damien YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL, your voice it is sublime
We know that you are ready and that this is your time
And though the contest’s over, the journey’s just begun
We won’t rest until your album reaches number 1
You are our Aussie Idol, the best there is by far
For in your own words, Damien, YOU ARE A STAR!
Now for the best news of all. I sent this off to Wespoint Blacktown when I entered the competition to win tickets to tomorrow's performance. I didn't think I had any chance of winning which is why I decided to go to Sunrise this morning. But late this afternoon I got a call to say that I was one of the lucky winners. I feel a little guilty that I will get to see Damien twice in two days when some of you haven't seen him at all. I did try to say to the lady who rang me that perhaps she could offer them to someone else as I had seen Damien in Sydney today. But she said that they were my tiickets and it was up to me what I did with them. So after a lot of serious thinking I called my best friend and asked if she would like to come with me. She was so excited and grateful that I had asked her - she has had a bit of a rough week and this will really cheer her up. I have sent Damien a message letting him know what happened, just so he doesn't think I am stalking him. Maybe I will remember to say all those things that seemed to disappear into consciousness today when I saw him. Anyway, hope you all like to poem.
