I have realised I've never commented on why I like this song so much. The lyrics are about a bleak subject, but they are ultimately a positive affirmation of life. "No, it's NOT OK." He's angry at the futility and finality of suicide and it's a reaction I understand. The melody is strong and the instrumentation is rocky, yet Damien's singing is poignant and almost wistful at times. I think this song really achieves what it sets out to do, and it's becoming one of my most frequently played.

I get the feeling I'm in the minority with this one though.

For me, this is such a beautiful and heartbreaking song.....we have sadly been touched by the suicides of 2 young men and my principal.......my son is very angry about suicide.......I just find it so sad and heartbreaking that people get to such a point they don't see the outstretched arms, but I understand it.

I have listened to this song so much and never made the connection with suicide. I couldn't have been listening to the words well enough. dmac - I can understand your son's anger at suicide because until a short while ago I felt the same way. However, recent experience has taught me that very often when a person decides to take their own life they really believe they are so worthless that to do so is doing everyone they love a huge favour. These people are obviously very sick and need help to get them over this dreadful state of mind.

I agree, I love this song. And as gj said I love the "no it's not okay" bit. I don't get the start of it though, the bit he sang in the video blog (the first verse). What's he singing about then?

I dont think D wrote this song about a suicide, I thought that was Come to Me.
I thought this song was about a relationship break up and someone bascially throwing everything that was great and wonderful in that relationship away.
This may make the first verse make more sense SPUD.
But as aways - I am ready to be corrected............

Hooray I found the article I was looking for. I knew there was a newspaper article that went through and mentioned what all the songs were about. Blew It all Away is about the suicide of a friend. "The songs on 'Where We Land' aren't all about love and fulfiment . Leith has explored some darker issues , particularly on 'Blew It All Away' a song about the suicide of a friend. It really affected me at the time, when I wrote the song because, unfortunately another friend had died not long before that of cancer Leith said. Another song, ' Alone' was written for a friend struggling after his father's death. The article is post 5 in this thread www.dleithonline.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=media&action=display&thread=1186879770&page=1

I'm really glad I'm not alone in appreciating the emotion of this song. I guess it touches me because I have had some experience with this tragedy too. Damien expresses the pain and anger of those left behind really well.

I adore this song too - I love how it's so different to any of the other songs on the album. The "no, it's not okay" bit is great.
