AS tots, they were both adorable. As adults, they're still adorable but the choice now couldn't be more different between Damien Leith and Jessica Mauboy as the Australian Idol final draws closer.
Mauboy, 17, is a part-Aboriginal year 11 student from Darwin who has blossomed from the shy teen we saw at auditions.
And Leith, 30, has recently come from Ireland to raise his family with his Australian wife.
The two would have both won last year's competition.
Mauboy agrees the past few months have transformed her.
"I don't think I have changed as a person, but I used to be so shy," she told The Eye yesterday. "I'm proud of myself how it has all turned out."
It was a pleasure to be a role model for Aboriginal girls, she said.
She speaks fondly of her times touring Aboriginal communities. "It's so beautiful, their reaction," she said.
"They are all so excited and I get very emotional."
Leith, too, admits it's an emotional time.
"To come here from Ireland and to get this kind of support it's just unbelievable," he said.
But the hardest thing was hardly seeing his 14-month-old son Jarvis and wife Eileen.
"I'm really feeling it, that I haven't seen much of them," he said.
"But I've discussed it with Eileen and of course that will all change once the show is over."
