[extract from podcast Idol Worship dated 19 October 2006 between Timmy Brunero and Mark Holden, day after showing of Damien's audition] at 3.38min.
Tim "..I wonder if sometimes you do go back and go gee i think I might have been a little too hard on that poor fellow?"
Mark "Oh, I think the Irish Guy, you know calling him Bog Irish and Butt Ugly, you know, .... I do think it's pretty accurate, but you know, he does have the voice of an angel and his beauty is a different kind of beauty"...
"But teenage pinups grow to be middle aged fat dudes, and so, what the beauty, the skill the talent has to be beyond that skin deep, and I think the young Irish Guy who was on last night is you know he just has a seriously glorious voice, and in the end, i think I said I dont' care what you look like, I don't care where you are from, i just love what you are presenting, and that's all that matters to me.
Tim, "Yes, i think I agree with you, he certainly did shine".

Ummm did Mark say that his comment regarding Damien's 'butt-ugliness' is accurate? *lets out steam*. But yes Mark, he IS beautiful in his way and he has the voice that trancends everything else. BTW, I have a littleeeee feeling that Mark is saying it to save his face - knowing that our boy won after all the insults Mark threw at him! Glad to have Tim Brunero said that Damien did/does shine

This is from an interview in October - nearly 2 months ago so not post winner justification.
He also gives a taste of what is to come: (about 11 mins in)
"there is that glorious girl from the northern territory the 16 year old we met out at Alice Springs and sang Whitney brilliantly. there is still that normal diva type of brillianct singer. But then on the other hand youve got that person from Brisbane, Bobby Flynn who si really quirky, really odd, really different, you've got 17 year old Lisa Mitchell, who is like an Edie Brickell and the new bohemians; Dean Geyer, classic pop star, but in a Tommy Geiger kind of way. Its a different, diverse crew of talent this year. It will be interesting to see which way Australia goes , whether naturally latch on to the big singing divas or they can really absorb these kind of quirky more interesting - to me - singer songwriter types...
There is also a great girl from Broken Hill who is like Kasey Chambers who I just adore, who hopefully will get a "leg up"... these are steps in a chain.
"is picking Dean,

oops - ignore the last line in that post - that was a mistype he didn't say that he was picking dean at all. I forgot to edit it out. Kinda spooky though that it is there given what later happened!

Actually, the podcast is from October, but I think the interview refers to an earlier period, say August 2006, ie pre Final 12.

you know calling him Bog Irish and Butt Ugly, you know, .... I do think it's pretty accurate
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I remember that was about the only time I let myself get mad on the forums . Bog Irish is not an endearment, it's an insult, it's meant to be insulting and I think it's disgusting for anyone to use that term. Butt Ugly is just a plain case of Mark needing glasses!!!

Agreed, Shimmery. Both comments are inaccurate and uncalled for. "Bog Irish" - not every Irish person is "Bog Irish", a put-down that sneers at the ignorance and lack of sophistication of some Irish. Mark would do well to remember that Ireland, known as "The Isle of Saints and Scholars" was responsible for preserving much of the western world's knowledge during "the dark ages".
I suspect that, in using "bog Irish", Mark actually showed his ignorance of the meaning of the expression.

That mark just passes it off like his comments were nothing and that it shouldn't hurt someone just make me dislike him even more. Just cause he has no feelings doesn't mean everyone else has too

Anyone criticising the Irish would do well to remember their place in preserving western culture! You could well be right. Mark kept using that dreadful term for weeks after, seeming to portray it as being affectionately insulting!! But maybe what you say is what in fact was true, he didn't actually realise how very insulting the Irish find that term. yes irishrokit, Mark should think before he so flippantly insults people - if he's a fellow artist, then he should understand that artists by nature are more sensitive and will scar from harsh words like that. Bad enough for a 30 yr old man, the poor 16 year old kids that were insulted as well as all the rest!

I agree - these extracts of mark's thoughts really do show how ignorant he is on so many fronts. Not just about Damien but his whole "Lisa Mitchell, who is like an Edie Brickell and the new bohemians; Dean Geyer, classic pop star, but in a Tommy Geiger kind of way." comment makes me roll my eyes. At the beginning of the series he thought Lisa Mitchell was some sort of musical child-genius and was convinced she'd be the winner! LOL So what he thinks about Damien clearly doesnt matter - and never has

Hah. 'Tommy' Geiger.
Mark is right that it takes the voice and a different kind of beauty to make it, but if he thinks it's ever okay to call someone the names he called Damien then he's a fool. He takes his own opinions too seriously.

The only thing in Mark's favour is that he voted Damien through unlike Kyle I believe that he also said something like it was the best falsetto he'd ever heard. As for the other remarks.... However, as so many of us have noted, it was the remarks of the two judges and Damien's response to them that got us in his corner. His judgment is seriously in question re Lisa Mitchell. When he called her a "young Sarah McLachlan" I almost fell off my seat. Perhaps she might have potential as a songwriter but she needs several more years of maturing, I think.
