I personally think that the journalist has not done his homework, and has not counted the HMV and Sanity sales. It doesn't add up that he has sold less than last years winner, because:
1. The numbers who watched the final had nearly doubled (if I recall correctly): ergo: More people were interested in he and Jess than the previous winners. 2. Why is it in contradiction to every other news report???
But I do wonder if, like you guys have said, that since the fan demographic spans more ages, that generally the older fans may do "the more sensible thing" and wait for the release this week...particularly since NOML will be on it anyway.

That Sanity sales (6000 copies).... is just for one store or throughout Australia? Either way it's really good. Now I'd rather believe other positive articles that one article that tries to put Damien down . Just for the sake of it the journalist

Hi all, I found this on the Irish Independant newspaper (you have to register- but it's free) www.unison.ie/ I sent them an email protesting how inaccurate it is but didn't go into detail. Thought someone on here who is more articulate than me and also has more facts might like to email them as well. If you click contact unison.ie at the bottom of the page then scroll down to: Contact Unison.ie To email Unison.ie click Here. You can select entertainment from a drop down box and then send them an email. Pop idol Leith takes a tumble with disastrous record sales Wednesday December 6th 2006 DAMIEN Leith, the Irish singer who proudly claimed the 2006 Australian Idol title two weeks ago, has been brought crashing back down to earth by disastrous record sales. Damien, from Kildare, has had the worst first-week record sales ever recorded in Australia for his winning song, 'Night of My Life'. It sold only a little over 16,000 copies throughout Australia compared to a high of nearly 130,000 for the winners of other years. The 2003 Idol winner Guy Sebastian's 'Angels Brought Me Here' outsold Leith's tune by more than 110,000 copies three years ago. Even more worrying for record label Sony BMG, Leith didn't match last year's winner Kate DeAraugo's effort. DeAraugo's 2005 album was the lowest selling platinum album in Australian music industry. Despite all of this, the Australian Record Industry Association Charts did their usual thing of awarding Leith platinum sales because 70,000 copies were shipped to stores.

"Pop idol"? Nope. Not even close. Try again.
"Disastrous record sales"? Seriously? When most of the stores that got them in are partway through their second batch?
"Worst first-week record sales ever recorded in Australia"? I can't even come up with a response to this as it's so stupid and obviously taken out of context.
"It sold only a little over 16,000 copies throughout Australia compared to a high of nearly 130,000 for the winners of other years." Yeah, but Casey didn't sell nearly so many as Guy, only one year on. Guy's sales were massive because it was a new fad. Like the crazy frog debacle, only with deserving talent. And... I wonder, has Guy's 'Elevator Love' sold 130 000 copies this week? No way. Irrelevant facts.
"Leith didn't match last year's winner Kate DeAraugo's effort. DeAraugo's 2005 album was the lowest selling platinum album in Australian music industry." So we're comparing Damien's single sales to Kate's album sales now? WTF??? And we know for a fact that Damien is selling more than Kate, anyway. No idea where they're getting this stuff from.
"Despite all of this, the Australian Record Industry Association Charts did their usual thing of awarding Leith platinum sales because 70,000 copies were shipped to stores." Wasn't this line lifted from some other piece? Isn't this whole thing a cut-and-paste job of other articles? In any case, it's right - this is the usual thing to do. Damien is, I'm sure, not the first and he won't be the last. And who flippin' cares?
Garrrrrrrr. *gets out spork*

What an awful negative article, and how on earth can they make an accurate figure when they haven't counted Sanity and HMV sales?
I'm proud of Damo and think the above article is nowhere near a true reflection of how well his single is selling. Where's that hammer?

These doom and gloom, anti-Idol, told-you-so type of journalists make me wretch! Get over it! We will have to see if Damien ultimately succeeds. But basing on his grounded personality, infectious Irish charm, strength of family, his obvious love for Australia and what he has done so far in such a short in my eyes he is already a success. Let's hope with good management, sound career direction, correct song choice and continuous album after album sales, Sony BMG truly understand and appreciate the talent of Damien Leith. I for one have already his debut single and am looking forward in getting his DVD/CD combo and all his upcoming albums.

A responsible journalist would go back to the earlier sales figures and delete the HMV and SANITY and any other currently ommitted retailer numbers and then compare if they have to. Why were those two taken off the Aria list? Here the local Myers store matches any discount price they offer. Guess the real figures will only come out when Damien gets his royality statements. Consistent followup quality of product usually wins out over spectacular initial sales figures anyhow. Think of Vanessa Amorrissi's career and be very afraid.............
