Considering Damien gets no radio airplay, #32 isn't too bad. The album has gone platinum, the critics can hardly call it a failure. And Damien has so many other strings to his bow, like being a successful author and signing that big music publishing deal recently. So nothing for him to be ashamed of! We can only hope radio sometime gets on board, but if not, does it matter? And for comparison purposes, I note Shannon Noll's new CD isn't selling quite as well as his last effort. What big music publishing deal Sunshine? I missed that news. Yes you missed this......... dleithonline.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=media&action=display&thread=1190774739

some interesting facts from iTunes: - WWL album currently sits at #59, pretty great considering that it is outselling albums by artists released several weeks after WWL
- WWL spent at least 13 consecutive days in the #1 position after its release before I stopped counting, after spending a number of days in the Top 10 where it entered almost immediately upon release.
- I've read elsewhere that digital album sales do not count towards the aria album charts (only singles do apparently?). Not sure if this is true or not, but if not...then the mind boggles at how many copies of WWL have actually been sold, especially in those early 13 consecutive days!
- If you have a look at D's iTunes profile, the top downloaded songs have changed dramatically in the last couple of weeks. Upon release of WWL, NOML was first, 22 Steps second followed by Danny Boy, Songbird and the b-sides of 22 Steps. Now, AIWIY and SLTS rank right after NOML and 22 Steps in popularity...
This means that people ARE paying attention to what they are hearing on TV, and are buying these 2 tracks, heavily. It makes me wonder however how this will impact the single sales of AIWIY..as it appears that people are already buying it!

I don't want to put a downer on anything, but what do you make of these articles, from www.undercover.com.au?Damien Leith, Another Idle Idol by Paul Cashmere - October 3 2007 photo by Ros O'Gorman CD sales for 2006 Australian Idol winner Damien Leith have come to a crawl. The "platinum" selling record 'Where We Land' has run out of pace almost 30,000 units short of the trophy value. After 6 weeks, it is sitting at 40,899 units sold. Platinum in Australia is awarded for sales of 70,000 units but in true Idol fashion, a little premature platinum injection is good for perception. 'Where We Land' sold reasonably for the first two weeks (12,760 and 13,064 units respectively) but sales halved in the third week. This week, 'Where We Land' landed at number 29 with sales of 1,769. The first week sales of 'Where We Land' were less than 2005 winner Kate DeAraugo 'A Place I've Never Been', who before Leith scored the first week lowest selling debut of an Idol with sales of 15,600. The 2007 series of Australian Idol has been a ratings disaster with Channel 7 comedy 'Kath & Kim' slaughtering the karaoke show by more than 1.5 million viewers every week. Australian Idol Winner Continues His Crawl To Real Platinum by Paul Cashmere - October 8 2007 photo by Ros O'Gorman Damien Leith's 'Where We Land' album is continuing at snail's pace on its way to selling 70,000 units, the level for platinum in Australia. Last week, the album sold a further 1,852 units, bringing the total so far to 42,751. Leith has already received a platinum award for the record despite a shortfall of more than 30,000 units at the time of the presentation. He currently has 27,249 units to sell before what has sold into stores matches customer sales. In Australia, sales to the general public are irrelevant to Gold and Platinum accreditations. Only sales to stores are counted, despite the fact that stores can return unsold units. As ARIA does not "balance the books" between sales to stores and stores to customers and labels do not report returns to ARIA, artists can easily be awarded platinum without ever really achieving it. Case in point was Idol winner Casey Donovan, who received a triple platinum award for her album. One chain told Undercover that they alone returned platinum for undersold units to the label. 'Where We Land' has landed outside the Top 30 this week. The album has fallen to number 32 after only 7 weeks on the chart. Even if the Leith album can maintain last week's sales figures, 'Where We Land' won't really be platinum for another 15 weeks, putting it into 2008. Here's a reality check for the reality show byproduct … it's not going to happen.

I believe that the author is being very selective with who he is singling out... its a well known fact that accreditations are based on sales into stores and not out of them, and its a practice not exclusive to Idol... I read somewhere that James Blunt sold 10,000 copies of his album in its first week, yet it debuted Platinum. Thats a big difference. Shannon Noll sold about the same on his debut, and was accredited Gold. Yet the article is written as if Damien's figures are extraodinary and a sham, even though its standard industry practice. It also fails to mention that Damien debuted with no accreditation at all- it was only after massive first week sales, 5000 more than his nearest rival and a #1 position that Gold was shipped due to an obvious demand, and only after a stronger 2nd week of sales that Platinum was shipped. Its not as if they shipped 70,000 copies into stores in the first week to make it look popular...it WAS popular, and therefore demanded large shipments. No mention also of the extraodinary iTunes sales either.... but I guess all of this wouldn't make as good a story, would it?

okay, I hadn't come across his ravings before. He's the one that also wrote the Roadkill article. or something like that... I've checked out alot of his ramblings, and they all have negativity attached to them regarding Damien.
