Gotta say I love seeing D with beer in hand, looking happy and like he's enjoying himself too, Rox and Princey. ;D This sounds like such an interesting evening, full of singer/songwriters. And LOVE The Basement as a venue. Would kill to get there to hear D sing again.

Wow!! What a fabulous show this turned out to be! Yes, I did get to go last week but sorry I didn't get to get my head around writing a report till now. We go home well after 2am to a very sick dd - recurring whooping cough - dd's better now so report time... Anyway, once again the Basement delivers! This is really one of the best venues for an intimate show experience in Sydney... and that doesn't mean it's just for acoustic sets which this wasn't We arrived nice'n early but the doors hadn't yet opened. so instead of waiting around hubby and I wandered elsewhere for our meal. Getting back after dinner we noted the dining area was full up. The stools were all taken (that's okay, had comfy boots for standing ) But wandering around the back to check if there were any other DLO members and lo and behold there was "Hello there!" said the familiar gentle voice from the Irish guy on the side of the bar And yes, Glawz, Damien was pretty happy... though looking a little bit weary? He'd mentioned that he'd had a busy day including training. And because of some event/appointment, they had to rush off after their set. In fact he was very conscious of the time that he arranged with the Sony people running the gig to get his set moved forward from the original plan so he'd be at the start. He also warned me that he was only doing two songs ( i knew there wouldn't be many but thought there'd be at least three But Damien explained that this really wasn't his gig - it's a touring show and he was just included in that one night. We didn't talk for long as the show was starting soon and I wanted him to get his drinks or whatever before it. The line-up, besides Damien, was still really exciting. The flyers said: Join a collection of contemporary singer songwriters, including Damien Leith, Steve Balbi (Noiseworks), Evelyn Duprai, Spencer Jones, Elliott Weston (Welter), Nicky Kurta, Sam Joole and Simon Bruce, backed by a superb band featuring Syd Green (drums), James Haselwood (bass), Charmaine Ford (keys), Rachel Thompson (violin/viola) and Charlotte Roberts (cello) under the creative direction of Joseph Calderazzo (guitars)
They were all fantastic.

STORYLINES is a special concert series that celebrates the great storytelling songs by the likes of Harry Chapin, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. I really loved the choice of songs. Damien started the invitations for the audience to sing along with him (impossible in parts though!). A bit hard with some of the other singers doing their own interpretation but some had a go too. A thoroughly enjoyable night. They were all amazing with their interpretations of the original songs. We'd already seen Steve Balbi and Jeff Duff in a David Bowie tribute show and were looking forward to hearing them again. We weren't disappointed. At one point we saw about 9 people on that small stage as one group moved off while another replaced them. Some of the artists overlapped with others to support in the band or do back-up vocals for each other. There was almost an ensemble feel to the show sometimes which was very nice to see. However, since Damien wasn't part of the usual show, when the second performer finished and then introduced Damien it did look a bit chaotic. As he, Eric, Steve and Cesar moved onto the stage the previous 5 musicians squeezed past them with their guitars. For all the different acts the transition between acts was usually fast. Damien was very enthusiastically welcomed to the stage. He opened with Hallelujah. and where with other performers, there had been some annoying chatter from a group in the back and other noises around... when Damien did his set you could've heard a pin drop. He really had the audience under a spell He even received a Standing ovation from some of the audience after Hallelujah. And after he finished an absolutely jaw-droppingly great version of Crying people were cheering and whisteling. His voice had filled every corner of the room. then when he said goodnight you could hear the stunned gasp of disbelief... a few people were starting a bit of an "Encore" chant but realised as the next act came on the encore wasn't going to happen... so there were expectant mutterings of "He'll probably come back on later"... Now, these people were probably feeling disappointed if they saw D and band slipping out the side door about 10 minutes later. But in all honesty, with the show going from 9:30pm to 1:30am with a short break in the middle. Really, no-one was complaining about the show. I loved the range of songs performed. They were from the '60's through to the 90's. but what was great was that each artist did their own version. Tribute, yes. Imitation, no. All the singers were very well received but definitely, Damien made the most impact for his mini-set.
