FORGET the legion of experts with their two cents' worth _ Damien Leith chose his all-important new single on the advice of his wife Eileen and toddler son Jarvis.
The down-to-earth singer songwriter officially launches his post-Idol career with 22 Steps, a song that has been on high rotation in the Leith household for the past few months.
"If Jarvis doesn't do a little dance, it's a bad sign,'' Leith laughed, while taking a break from filming the single's video this week.
"And Eileen's got great ears, she's always bang-on about whether a song will work for me or not.''
The 31-year-old has been recording his official debut album since February, working with John Farnham's legendary producer and talent scout Ross Fraser and Alex Lloyd. One of the tracks expected to be aired in the lead-up to the album is the heartbreakingly beautiful ballad Song For Jarvis.
Leith said while he has co-written 11 songs on the album, the Crowded House-inspired single was penned by Canadian composer Andy Stochansky. "Ross (Fraser) came across the song and while there was no pressure to do it, it was too good not to. It was the right song at the right time,'' he said.
With the family recently celebrating the arrival of baby son Jagger, Leith said the pressure to perform with the album was off. "It's such a reality shock after all the recording and getting things done and then this baby comes along and it brings (me) right back to what is important. As excited as I am to be doing this, little Jagger, Eileen and Jarvis _ they are all that matters.''
22 Steps will be released on June 22.
