TV crushes Mauboy's bid From Sydney Confidential March 06, 2007 08:24am www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,23663,21332904-36557,00.html THE Australian Idol factory has failed to roll out another No.1 album with Jessica Mauboy's hopes of claiming top spot crushed by a conflicting TV phenomenon. Mauboy's debut album The Journey lobbed a disappointing No.4 in the ARIA album chart yesterday - despite featuring all the tracks that saw her finish runner-up in the TV karaoke competition to Damien Leith last year. Instead it was American rock outfit The Fray claiming pole position with their first effort How To Save A Life after the title track was used to promote the return of Grey's Anatomy. The cult medical drama also helped Snow Patrol's Eyes Open stitch up second spot after their single Chasing Cars featured on the program's second season finale. No doubt Mauboy's record label is still hoping her journey can match the success of Leith's Idol compilation, which has gone four times platinum.

wow..is debuting at #4 really considered disappointing? I thought it was pretty damn good, especially as Idol finished months ago... there is so much pressure on Idol 'graduates' to chart really well, isnt there?

Jessica was on Sunrise last week - I had a look at the clip this afternoon with my kids She sang Christine Aguilera's Beautiful (with the exact matching trills and turns, but still lovely) www.seven.com.au/sunrise

My sister has the album - she and my mum both liked her, although they like Damien as well. To be honest, I'm so used to listening only to Damien on Idol, just hearing her makes me want to go listen to him. I have reached an accomplished level of selective hearing ;D

Anything to sell a story. #4 is better than I expected, and I'm sure Jess is thrilled as well. Most artists who got their break on Idol struggle to get the top position away from the hype of the show. It's unreasonable to expect an album full of performances that didn't win the competition for Jess to sell as well as the winner's did, so long after Idol has finished. Is everyone still caught up on this 'the runner-up sells more' myth? And personally, that Grey's Anatomy promo thing has put me off buying The Fray's album for a while. Did they have to play it over the credits of everything?</unrelated rant>

It always amazes me how negative people can be sometimes. Jessica is a lovely girl, with a beautiful voice, and #4 is something she can be very proud of. I saw her on Sunrise last Friday and thought she sounded lovely. I did notice that there weren't too many people waiting around for her signing though - at least the camera didn't show too many. Still, good luck to her!

Just had a look through this week's ARIA Chart Report -
Jessica's Journey album - no 4 nationally, no 3 in NSW, no 6 in Vic/tas, no 4 in Qld, no 1 in SA [which I assume includes NT sales] and no 7 in WA
By comparison, Damien's Journey after 13 weeks in the chart was 19 nationally, 20 in NSW, 19 in Vic/Tas, 21 in Qld, 16 in SA, 21 in WA

I think 4 is a pretty good showing too. Can't really understand the overly negative article. She has a loyal fanbase, and I agree that this long after the hype has died, she would be up against it. I wouldn't buy her music (over the diva thing), but her voice is amazing.

I'm so happy that Jess has made it to #4 on the Aria charts. I think she is just gorgeous and her voice is amazing. I loved her on Idol, she always made me giggle along with her although her giggle was more from nerves.
I'm not really understanding Sony and their handling of Jess, well I am understanding, it's $$$$. Sony are pumping out yet another Journey album which includes The Night Of My Life on Jessica's album. It's not going to work, sorry. I don't think Jess has found a comfortable genre yet. She's tried country, she mixed it up with R&B and the diva factor on Australian Idol and she did a decent job with all of them. I just wish some brilliant songwriter would take Jess under their wing and write some brilliant material just for her. She hasn't had a lot of life experiences as yet but I think we're going to hear a lot more from our bush princess in years to come.

Just after Idol finished, I remember both Damien and Jess saying they wanted to do a duet - any chance of that happening in the future? Of course Sony is out to make more money! I agree Jess needs some good songwriters/producers for her album. One hopes she isn't turned into the next Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey diva type performer.
