Thanks for all the lovely well wishes, what a fun night! From DLO we had MaggieMay, Braffy's parteh, Kazza & parteh, Dawn, & Nuffy & parteh & P & me - and a grand time had by all! Sorry you couldn't be there Braffy
hope you had a great evening at your event too
I'm so excited by the songs tonight, it was a really unusual show and some FANTASTIC moments! It's a bit late and my memory's a bit
but will do my best without a setlist to fill in a bit til the others arrive tomorrow. Definitely think I enjoyed this show most this year because of the unexpected moments.
Andy Brown was support act as Damien has mentioned on his facebook and he's a really lovely guy too, we all got to have a nice chat with him after the show also. Very talented songwriter and I think my favourite song of his set was the last one he did, it seemed very powerful. He got us all singing along and wow - Ryde Eastwood likes a song! Big Irish contingent in the audience too and everybody in the mood for a good singalong tonight right into Damien's set too!
Damien came on just before 9 and he bounced onto the stage looking happy and teh gorgeous of course as always
Steve was there too with a drum kit right up close to him at the front of the stage so right from the start was a very different sort of show!
Damien threatened all night to have a go at the drums and did in a very special song! More on that later!
Damien opened with a gorgeous version of
Catch the Wind and it was really nice that Steve was accompanying most of the night with brushes on the drums, was that live sort of acoustic sound Crowded House used to have too when Paul Hester would come out the front with the other guys. Steve also played guitar/bass during some songs.
Next was the lovely
Wouldn't Change a Thing and you could tell the whole crowd loved it even if it maybe wasn't so familiar to them.
The setlist is only in my head so at this point it might start leaping about but anyway close to the front we also had
Beautiful with story from Damien of how he is totally dowsing himself in Estee Lauder now and could we all revel in his fragrance emanating from the stage (lol)
More tales of him as a 17 year old writing
Randy Sandy (I'd never heard it before!) so finally got to hear the notorious first song - well a verse at least
Irish section followed -
Seven Drunken Nights Rocky Road to Dublin and the
Diddly Dee Song which just went into crazy-land with even more diddlies than usual - lol then Damien says singalong
Danny Boy then which I find so hard to hear now without a tear but I loved it and it was beautiful. I think Damien might have wiped a little tear away at the end too.
There was lots of Roy tonight - solo
Leah and also
Only the Lonely, You Got It & Crying. With Kazza up the front you know you're in for fun & a bit of cheek - she called out a couple of funny responses during the evening that cracked Damien up and had us in stitches
THank goodness we also have Kazza to thank for requesting
Make You Feel My Love Have been so lucky to hear this one live at a couple of shows and like many of us it's such a favourite - Aaaaah perfection!!!! This just has to be recorded - please keep this one top of the list Damien if you're including any covers on the next album?!
The middle/end part of the show was
- lots of different things and unexpected surprises - Damien did a few new songs and they were fabulous! It's all a bit of a blissful blur just now but will try to elaborate!
One of the new songs was one Damien called "
21" I think, and is about being in a bar on New Year's Eve looking back to your 20s and thinking about the past and what might have been - really nice song. There were parts of the chorus that really really reminded me of the sound of the Monkees big ballad style songs in the 60s - it burst out in a similar way into the chorus and Damien's voice was so evocative of that whole sound - was really exciting to hear these new things he's trying!
Andy Brown came back on stage and he and Damien sang one of the songs they had written together called
"Never Forget". OMG -
LOVED this song!!!!!!!
Big highlight of the night!!! They are a fabulous duo together as songwriters, you could tell how they would complement each other from the songs Andy was doing earlier. The feeling of the song was about looking back saying Never Forget what we had. Really pretty and also emotional heartfelt song, it takes a turn throughout the song into a different more emotionally raw mood.
Damien gave Andy his guitar and took the microphone to walk around the stage to sing and interact with the audience during this song - it was really powerful and though there was already a big connection with this audience tonight this made it even moreso. Damien was calling out one part of the song "Give me your love - Wooh" and the audience had to sing it back - at first it was sort of in a fun way but then he was stalking around the stage really
belting it out and the audience really singing back in response!! Was fantastic!!! This was the part of the song that broke out totally in feel from the more reflective side into a much more raw emotional part.
Every time Damien breaks free from the microphone stand like that it always brings a new dimension and this was a great song to do it!!!
Straight after that was another big highlight and was one I think Damien decided to add in on the spur of the moment - John Lennon's
Stand By Me with Andy remaining and Steve on drums acoustic style. I was just about jumping out of my head excited to hear Damien do a Lennon song as a cover and it's also a huge fave of P's, would love to hear more!!!!
Whole audience got right into it, big singalong and DAMIEN got onto the DRUMS too!
- GREAT atmosphere. OMG big highlight again of a fab night.
At encore time Damien also treated us with the gorgeous new original
Stronger then Superman and the promise of a new album later this year - so excited about it and he sounds very excited about it too!
Pretty Woman & Hallelujah ended the evening - it all ended far too soon but was a fantastic night! Damien and Andy came out later to have a chat with all who stayed on and was very nice to meet Andy and gorgeous as always to see teh lovely Idol
Well I'd better get some sleep I suppose lol - not at all tired, still have a head full of wonderful songs and mad convos. Goodnight then, lovely to see all who were there and meet some lovely newcomers. We all had a great time and thank you Damien for another fabulous night!!!
