Dear Damien,
The anticipation for "Where We Land" had been driving me mad, having to wait so long to hear that glorious voice and your new songs. Though I certainly respected and applauded your decision to do so and not rush the creative process.
So, as you may imagine it was with anxious excitement that I purchased your album Saturday afternoon. Rushing home, to immerse myself in the beauty of your music. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Your music and voice has the capacity to transcend any boundary, to sing directly to a person's soul and remind us of the intricate similarities by which we are inextricably bound- our humanity: our yearnings, our struggles, our fallibilities, our triumphs and our joys.
Thanks to the lovely Damienities on here, I was aware that Danny Boy was going to be on the album. To be honest, it has for many years been a song that has made me cringe- just because it seemed to be the only song ever used in association with Irish people etc. There certainly have been times in the past when I have been moved, but they were few and far between. Then, Damien Leith's version begins. You reduced a room full of women (my mam, sister and I) to tears, every note, every word resonated emotion, as if for the first time Danny Boy actually meant something. Listening to you sing it, was like the voice of angels from another more precious/innocent time, whisper softly to me and embrace me. When I listened, it was like being a little girl again, surrounded by family & friends in either ours or my aunty's house, with my gran (Lord rest her) there, the room filled with an almost tangible feeling of unconditional love and warmth. Such a precious time. Thank you!
Yours is a gift, rare and wonderful and I thank you deeply for taking the chance all those months ago to not give up on your dream. Dia dhiut.
Slan,
Donna D
