I'm too lazy (or is that cranky?) to scroll through 22 pages of 22 Steps thread to search for answer, so could someone please tell me the logic behind releasing 22 Steps to radio 3-4 weeks before it's available to purchase? I'm not sure I get it - my wife watched the video yesterday and asked when I was buying it and when I told her the delay she thought they were mad...she thought that delaying the sale could make people be over the song by the time they can buy it.
Has Damien or anyone else come up with a logical reason?

No official reason has been stated anywhere that I can recall.
*speculates*
Perhaps it is to get the song on higher and higher rotation and onto playlists on radio across the country and regionals, so that it starts showing up on the requests shows/Top 40 each night (eg Hot 30 on the Austereo network). Then with lots of airplay, the back announcing states the impending release date (which by next week will not be so far away) so that it gets its biggest sale numbers in the first week of release.
The only other possibility would be that it fails to kick on radio and Sony decides not to release it at all, but having announced the release date I doubt that is going to happen (and, anyway, it should get lots of airplay, lol).

I agree with everything that ODT has said. I think it is silly. I would rather be able to go out and get it now or in 1 week, not 4. I am now playing TWJ. I can't get enough of Damien's music

I did post about this in another thread the other day! Apparently they can take anywhere from 2 - 4 weeks after a song is released to radio....that is so they (Sony) can gage how well the song is received and requested, hence they will know how many cds to distribute around the stores! This info came from the lady at Sanity who also works at a Radio Station. That's just what she told me anyway. and I agree, it should be in stores NOW!!

or available as a LEGAL download now ...seems an odd policy not to pre-empt the *cough* other sort.

I think it is going to be available as a legal download from Itunes soon.
Edit - the actual date has not been announced yet.

Just downloaded 22 steps as a ringtone for my phone! Only get a snippet, but I will enjoy Damien serenading me everytime my mobile rings!! ;D Good advertising for the song as well! Just got to wait for someone to ring me now.... Ok, I just rang myself!! I guess holding off the release will give everyone in the general community a chance to hear it, so people other than just passionate Damienites will know there is a single on the way. So hopefully it will go to number one with a bullet when it is released, instead of a slow climb up the chart. Perhaps that's part of their reasoning. Does this happen with other singles as well, this wouldn't be the first time, would it?

I think it is going to be available as a legal download from Itunes soon. Edit - the actual date has not been announced yet. Question: If its available for legal download from iTunes etc BEFORE the official release date, do the sales still count towards the aria charts?

I don't have an answer for you on that one Winter but I do agree with everything ODT said. I live in a country area where the local radio station is hopeless. When I phoned them and requested 22 Steps I was told that they don't have it yet because it hasn't been released! So I'm taking that to mean that they have to wait to buy the single before they can play it on air!
If the single was released a few days after it's initial air play on the major radio stations around the country, people in my position would be able to go out and buy a few copies, send one to our piss ant radio stations so they could play it for the enjoyment of their limited audience.
