One of the things I enjoy about 22 Steps is all the various interpretations

To be random... maybe the line 'I will never try again' is part of what he thinks she will say, and not his response? It does make a lot more sense that way - being with someone who would deny your wish for an orange raincoat would kinda poison you against relationships in general. But either way of looking at it is interesting. Maybe someone can ask Damien how he interpreted it? Good point Kami! I took a bit of time trying to see something else but you've come up with something that is a real candidate. I'm going to listen to it again right now!

Kami! I now think you are absolutely on target with this! I love it that you've pointed this out! Yay!!! The interpretations we've all discussed has made this song so much better for me now. It was always a better rendition that the original in my view.

I think it's really interesting how virtually all of us seem to have interpreted that line the other way first. I've thought about it for weeks and weeks and not been able to make much sense out of the line... just shows sometimes all you need is to be half asleep. Not to discredit any other ways of interpreting it - I personally really like the mental picture of someone not being strong enough to pursue the person they love after being rejected... adds a whole lot more story to the song! Ah. I do love a piece of music that promotes discussion. ;D

Ha...all these interpretations are interesting. "I would never try again" says to me that, if she rejected him "get out, don't step in" the pain of rejection would be too much to bear enduring it again, after biding his time in the first place. A goal too hard to reach.

Oh yes. I think all responses to rejection are legitimate Kami. They are what they are and we'll all find different ones appealing or not so. I know I was too focused on what I now realise was a very limited idea of the lyrics. I LOVE how this is all unfolding for us. Maybe D could have taught us a thing or two about really LISTENING. LOL

A goal too hard to reach. This line is one of my favourite parts of the song. It's so poignant- and I agree with your interpretation Trilly but will have to go and listen again from the other point of view. It just seems to me that this line sums up what the whole song is about- that he is so frightened of rejection that he is waiting until the "right" moment to approach her. (it makes me think of the bloke from "Love Actually" who was in love with his best friends girlfriend and secretly videoed just her at the wedding)

The Show is called "Australian First" and is on FoxFM. Not with Hamish and Andy. Might be a podcast.
