Although my mother will kill me, and cast me asunder for uttering such profanities, I don't think Roy Orbison's singing of this song is as good as Damien's - *ducks hurling objects* Damien captures much more emotion in the song, and Roy's delivery is too upbeat for the words. The lyrics however are fabulous, and I doffs me lid to Mr O for that.

And just to add to dededom's list of 'Crying' versions, here's a live performance by Orbison and k.d. lang on The Tonight Show in 1987. Stunning. And the vocal arrangement sounds very similar to the one Damien did on Idol, albeit truncated. Note how young k.d. lang looks - she must have just been starting out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT89Cte_cg8&mode=related&search=

Tee hee murfs. I'm diversifying my skill base here on this forum - you may have noticed I do a small side line in punctuation, grammar and word association.

I saw KD Lang sing Crying at the State Theatre in the early 1990s. She was very impressive. She has the most wonderful timbre in her voice *sorry to get technical*. As does Damien of course - although very different in each register - his mid register is getting stronger, and he did some great belty sections with it during Idol - even NOML has it as we know - but the timbre of his falsetto *shudders* is in another realm.

I was at the same concert. I think lang has one of the most gorgeous female voices. I have a great deal of respect for her as a vocalist and musician. She also has impeccable musical taste.

Crying is definitely my favourite. I've always loved the Roy Orbison song, but I have to say that I prefer Damien's version. Even my husband said that he preferred Damien, and he's no fan. I still can't believe I'm saying it, but I think that the difference between the two is in the emotion that Damien makes you feel. I don't think that I have ever had a singer wrap me up emotionally the way he does. I sometimes think that it's his most remarkable talent. Whatever you want to call it, charisma or something else, it's an ability that he was born with and what an asset it is.

I had no idea that she had sung with Roy. I love k.d. lang. Have you heard her version of hallelujah?

yes, I have. I think she's the only female vocalist in the world that can do that song justice. Love her voice and her artistry.

Well, it's taken me this long to properly appreciate this song...I really enjoyed it the night he sang it on idol, but then I felt it sounded a bit forced toward the end - I even thought he was going to break into a yodel. *don't worry, already ducking in case anyone was wondering* Now that I've listened to it more than several times, I realise he's just singing his little heart out and I love it and I couldn't help but contribute to this thread - finally!

That was the huge performance for Damien on Idol, the one that really propelled the momentum for him amongst the voting public. When he gets up to the high notes, it literally takes my breath away. The only downside is that he didn't get to sing the whole song on Idol.

I don't really want Damien to release any covers but I have to say if he released Crying...phwoar!!! I think he'd have a very good chance of outdoing Anthony's The Prayer sales.
