That song on Idol was 100% perfect in every respect: I defy anyone to find one better. I agree wholeheartedly! Before Damien's version the only one that really stuck in my head was one I constantly made fun of that Emily Vinette did on Canadian Idol 2005. It was BAD. Now my mind is constantly combining Damien's performance with one by Ashley Coulter from this year's Canadian Idol because in my opinion no one can top those two versions. They should really turn it into a duet.

Crying is just outstanding!, he did the BEST job at it. Thats why he got the call from the Orbison family

Crying is just outstanding!, he did the BEST job at it. Thats why he got the call from the Orbison family 'Crying' is my personal favourite of all of Damien's Idol performances. It was exquisite, and I've lost count the number of times I've either watched or listened to it. I never tire of it. However, I'm very sceptical about the story regarding the Orbison family. I'd like to know who told Kyle this, and on what authority were they speaking? As far as I know, Damien has still not heard what happened next - whether the Orbisons actually heard his version or what they thought about it. And there hasn't been a peep from Kyle about it either. Hmmm. Frankly, I think this was yet another example of Kyle blowing smoke out of his arse. I can't wait for Dicko to show him up next year.

I hadn't watched it for a while, then I saw it is the Australasian Idol clip on You Tube. I was mesmerised. He was staring at me through the pixels. It was so powerful, his voice, the way he looked at the viewer, the connection...it hit me with a sledgehammer. I was lucky to see him perform this one at Warringah. He's such a deft hand - the first time he sang the chorus through he sayed in the low notes, everyone was expecting the high notes and went "ohhh!!! ohhhh...." Then he shyrocketed the next time through - and everyone went up with him!

oooow, big call sunshine! The Big O is legendary. D's version is sublime, though, and like Mark, I wish I'd heard the whole song! Was waiting with baited breathe for this performance as an absolute belter and D did not let us down!

Yes, maybe a big call from me, but there are definitely echoes of Roy Orbison in Damien's vocal delivery.

You can compare Damien's versions of Crying with Roy Orbison's (& KD Lang): Damien on Idol - www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOy6CD5pl1Q (with judges' comments) Damien acoustic live - www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8hQU9NbEvcRoy Orbison - www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeWYSmnrdKgRoy Orbison in concert - www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VBGrlDxSEkRoy Orbison & KD Lang - www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtfQ9VKcUg4And here are the lyrics: I was all right for a while I could smile for a while But I saw you last night You held my hand so tight As you stopped to say, "Hello" Oh, you wished me well You couldn't tell That I'd been crying over you Crying over you When you said, "So long" Left me standing all alone Alone and crying, crying Crying, crying
It's hard to understand But the touch of your hand Can start me crying I thought that I was over you But it's true, so true I love you even more Than I did before But, darling, what can I do? For you don't love me And I'll always be crying over you Crying over you
Yes, now you're gone And, from this moment on I'll be crying, crying Crying, crying Yeah, crying, crying Over you

I like the Big O, but his version sounds so upbeat and happy - so does his version of Only the Lonely, compared to Chris Isaak's, with all the 'dum dum dum da-da-do-wa' in the background. I guess that's just his style and the way music was back then. I know Damien has no reason to be 'crying', but he sings from such an emotional place, and the stare grabs you by the heartstrings! It's just beautiful! Is it true that the song was written about Orbison's family who died in a fire? The lyrics don't seem to suit that story

As much as I love Damien and think he is a world class talent, I think the definitive version of 'Crying' will always belong to the song's composer - Roy Orbison. *ducks* Of the many thousands of cover versions of this famous song, Damien's is right up there and is among the very best. Orbison was a pioneer and legend of rock and roll, who's a hero and idol of many, many famous musicians. As far as I know, 'Crying' was inspired by a chance encounter that Orbison had with an old flame whom he still loved - and the lyrics would certainly bear that out.
