How brave it was of Damien to attempt this, a guy who supposedly had never had opera or classical singing training before! And yet, he pulled it off amazingly well. That last high note he holds on to at the end is spine tingling! I love the look of relief and satisfaction on his face after he has sung his lungs out! ;D ;D

It isn't my favourite song, but I am in awe of him for attempting it with such a short preparation. To dare to take on such a task at such a critical stage in the competition because he wanted to challenge himself and grow as a singer at the age of 30 demonstrates so much about his character. I am still amazed at how good a job he did, and as you say sunshine, the look on his face when he pulled it off, both of relief and exultation, was just priceless. Was there a Damien fan with a dry eye at that moment? *has tremendous urge to go watch the video again*

Nessun Dorma would rank as one of all time favourites. Considering Damien only had a week to rehearse and had to learn Italian from scratch shows what a talent Damien truly is. What a star performance. It send tingles down my spine every time I hear it. I don't know if it is being considered as a full version but what a stunning video it would make. That would be absolutely awesome!

I've sung in Italian before (I've had classical singing training) and can I say i was mortified when I forgot the words ... and it is pretty damn hard to ad lib in Italian if you can't speak it!!!
I've also sung arias. And the breathing control required to perform them is incredibly challenging.
So when I heard Damien was singing an Aria. In Italian. With No Training? I. Was. Freaked. Out.
And spent the week leading up to the performance petrified it would be a disaster.
What a relief that he not only didn't end up in the car wash but actually made it his own and accomplished so much with it.
Boy oh boy though, the look on his face at the end - priceless - is the only word to describe it.

I admit, when I heard he was doing 'Nessun Dorma', I was scared for him, I thought this was way too risky and had the potential to go very wrong. Oh man, wasn't I glad he calmed my fears? I never tire of watching that performance on DVD, because after I saw that for the first time, I was agog with amazement! That voice is sensational!

I have to say that his Opera House performance was better than the first version he did. His diction was a lot better, and so was his mic technique.
The first version, though very good, wasn't enunciated very well, which is very understandable owing to the fact that he only had a week to learn it, and he does not speak Italian. However, I found that even the lyrics he sang in English were not very clear in the studio performance and were a bit garbled. But by the time he sang it for the second time, his diction had improved out of sight, and all the lyrics were crystal clear. An absolute showstopper!

Totally agree with you on this one, GM..although a few minor mispronunciations survived,( I speak Italian), this was the better performance by far, although both were stunning, I hasten to add!

*shivers at the memory* The length of the final vincero at the opera house makes me want to squeal! I was holding my breath - I thought I was gonna hyperventilate! How the heck does he breathe?! His voice sounded so deep and rich in this song, it's great that he doesn't have to rely on the high, sqeaky notes for impact. This really showed off his versatility - the Irish accent disappeared, even on the bits in English, and if he hadn't said 'thank you' at the end in his normal voice, you could mistake him from someone else! Who could guess he used to sing heavy metal? This was a huge achievement for him - to pull off something so different in such a limited amount of time and with so much at stake... *shivers at the memory again*

No matter how many times I listen to this one my heart always melts. Such depth of feeling! I think this will always be at the top of my list. I do wish that the opera house version was on The Winner's Journey. Every week he grew in confidence and it really was a joy to watch his 'journey' and the way he grew into his voice at the end.

His Opera House version is such a clean & perfect vocal, it's out of this world! If they could put two NOMLs on the CD, why not two 'Nessun Dormas'?

Have a look at this ... Someone has commented on the American Idol forums "Sorry if this has been posted here before but here's two *amazing* videos from the British talent show worth looking at: Paul Potts sings opera (a star is born): youtube.com/watch?v=i0dzZTPWrSM That Puccini aria is the same song that Damien Leith, an Ozzy transplanted Irish Tenor, sang to win Australian Idol ..."

Hello, At least the judges did not tell Paul Potts that he was butt ugly and to pull his teeth out with pliers. They heard a lovely voice and gave it the credit it deserved. Nixter
