Never were truer words written. David Reyne is the most self-absorbed, obnoxious and downright rude 'interviewer' (and I use the term lightly) that Australia has ever produced. Caught an interview with Damien on Nova this morning over here in the west. Nathan (an ex-Big Brother contestant, funny bloke actually) was interviewing and saying something along the lines of "I think it's funny how people will come here and see that our Australian Idol is actually Irish. I don't think it's wrong, just funny". So at least they saw the humour in it. Then the cohost Nat (not very funny), asked him to say "Potato" Damo groaned and basically refused to do it, but ended up being coerced (though I think he did it in an Aussie accent mwahaha)

I didn't get to see it either Although I don't want to hear David Reyne talk crap I wish they'd just drop the whole he's not Australian garbage. He chooses to live in this country, his wife and child are Australian, he works and pays taxes so get over it. If they keep going on about it everyone's going to think Australians are a bunch of racists. Imagine how they feel hearing that over in Ireland. If you won idol in ireland and the irish went on about you not be irish and you shouldn't have won it would make me wonder why I moved to that country. Fortunetly the majority of people I think don't care (cause he WON!!!) and I actually like him more because he's irish (and no I'm not) The irish seem such nice people and I would love to go there oneday. I just hope all the negitivity from some of the media doesn't turn them off coming here. I was watching last nights show again and they said somehting about Jess being in Indonesia as a kid so she wasn't born here either and is not 100% Australian but really no one is so what's the big deal? I don't care where someone comes from if they are a great singer and person. It's the idol voted by the Australian public not the 100% Australian born and bred idol. I think this will turn some people off entering the show that are of a different nationality which is just sad. Damo was just on the news as I'm typing. Wow one hours sleep and he still looks good ;D That would be great if they did a duet together. I was thinking they should have let the top 2 still do the group performance then it would have been a duet

I saw him on the news - his eyes looked a bit wider than normal! Caffeine does that I suppose! My mum heard him on the radio (don't know what station). They were talking about how he met Bono. They asked him if he met Bono again, would he talk to him now that's he Australian Idol and he said no, Bono's a superstar and he wouldn't know what to say to him! Being a winner hasn't swelled our boy's head - it's early days!

It's the idol voted by the Australian public not the 100% Australian born and bred idol. This is precisely the point that everyone keeps missing. The kind of jingoistic parochialism that's been on display in the last couple of weeks really irritates me about this country (true, I am easily irritated). Maybe I shouldn't be too quick to judge - after all a very large proportion of Australia did vote him for him to win ;D But even the fact that almost every Irish person on the planet and every Northern Territory person seemed to be barracking down regional lines really intensely annoyed me...but I digress. Absolutely, it shouldn't matter where they come from...anything to deepen the talent pool can only be a good thing. I take "Australian Idol" to mean "Our" Idol, rather than Idol who is one of "Us". That being the case, the top 12 could be comprised of a handful of Angolians, several Martians and a London telephone directory, and the winner would still be our Australian Idol.
