Supporting a young family while he's on Idol is tough for Damien Leith.
Australian Idol might look all fun and games for those competing, but what about the loved ones they have left behind?
It's proving particularly hard for Damien Leith and Chris Murphy, who have young families to support.
"We remortgaged to put in a new bathroom about a month before auditions," says Damien, married father of one-year-old Jarvis. "But we decided not to spend the money and see how Idol goes. The bathroom is still old, but you can pee in it!"
"We're surviving on that money and the little bit of money I get from Idol, which isn't really enough when you have a mortgage. The bills add up and it's always at the back of your mind."
Chris Murphy, stepfather of two and with another child on the way, says his family were prepared for something like Idol.
"We have the sort of mortgage that allows you to have some space if you need to," Chris says. "We get the wage from Idol - $500 a week - but we are spending very little here.
"There's no rent, meals are cooked for you; almost everything is taken care of."
