Damien Leith's mother, Angela, and his sister, Aine, arrived here from Ireland last Thursday to lend support to the Idol finalist. With only a handful of shows to go before the grand final, why did they wait this long to come over?
"For weeks, we've been trying to decide when would be a good time to head out," explains Angela. "With work commitments, we couldn't make it, but after the disco week we said, "Right, even if it's just for moral support and he's out of the competition, at least we can commiserate with him."
Even though Damien's mum has travelled a long way to be at her son's side, she's nervouse about watching him sing live on stage.
"I dread watching him perform," Angela giggles. "I sit here (at home in Ireland) on a Sunday morning and I haven't a fingernail left.. What would I be like in the audience? I said that I'll do the babysitting and Aine and (Damien's wife) Eileen can go, but Damien said, "You better be in the audience, Mum - or else.'"
Angela says that, if "by luck" Damien stays in the competition, his father, Paul, will head over as well. "Paul listens to his music over the internet and his eyes well up; he's a big sop, he is"

And will there be scanning and posting of said pics? ;D
And THANK YOU tv week, for now we have names! Although I need to ask a potentially stupid question here - is 'Aine' pronounced as its written? If that makes sense? I've never come across it before (I must be the only person on this board with zero Irish connections!)

Forgive me Aine if I get this wrong, but the name is pronounced close to "Anya" "Ainya" or even "Awn ya" depending on which Irish accent you have, from what I've heard. Lol and also depending on your Aussie accent too!

Lol and also depending on your Aussie accent too! OK, that was unexpected! Those letters really make those sounds? You realise I have no hope of getting this right.... not that I'll ever need to pronounce it out loud Thank you!

lol winterlong, the Irish language is delightfully filled with unexpected sounds - the letters don't quite mean what they do in English, the Irish language was lucky to be kept alive, the words were transcribed as best they could be into English in the 1800s I think but essentially it was a spoken language. Mum can speak a bit of Irish and I can speak a teeny bit, but learning it is quite a challenge to say the least if you don't grow up with it!
