They've been following his progress in the Idol competition via the internet, but for Damien Leith's family, there was nothing like experiencing Idol live.
"It's so different when you're in the audience," says sister Aine. "Mum and I were very nervous - you're so conscious of the cameraman. It was brilliant, though - really great fun."
Aine, who is an occupational therapist, has only recently changed jobs was hesitant about asking for time off to come to Australia. But her boss was very understanding - and it helped that Damien is now quite the celebrity in Ireland.
"People are really backing him," Aine says. "He's in the papers nearly every week."
While Aine has to return to work in two weeks, Damien's mum, Angela, will stay for as long as Damien is in the competition. But she admits she's suprised to find herself back here so soon. She visited Damien, his wife Eileen, and their baby, Jarvis, last Christmas and it was supposed to be their turn to visit Ireland!
"But it's brilliant to be with them again," Angela says. "I wouldn't have missed it for the world."
There's one place Angela missed out on seeing the inside of last time, which she would love to get the chance to see properly. "I stood outside the Opera House last Christmas," she says. "To see the inside of it would be something, all right."
