Monday November 27, 11:36 AM Irishman Leith is new Australian Idol By 7News
Former chemist Damien Leith came up with the magic formula last night, winning Australian Idol just a week after quitting his day job to pursue a singing career. Damien, who is originally from County Kildare but now lives in Sydney with his wife and baby son, beat Northern Territory teenager Jessica Mauboy to take the Idol crown.
Sunrise's music guru Molly Meldrum told the show Damien was a deserving winner.
"His voice was sensational," he said. "He's just got it."
He said the range of songs Damian sang during the contest made it difficult to predict what sort of album he would come up with.
"When you consider that over the weeks that we watched it, Damien did Creep, Message to My Girl , Cool and the Gang, Joe Cocker and Crying by Roy Orbison - who knows.
"It is like St Patrick's Day in Australia at the moment because you've got Damien winning this and you've got U2 going to the top of the ARIA charts."
Molly said 17-year-old Jessica also had the chance of a fantastic career ahead of her.
"Jessica should not worry about becoming second - she did a great job. Those who have come second have had amazing success, both Anthony Callea and Shannon Noll."
