Irishman is new Australian Idol 27th November 2006, 6:00 WST West Australian
Damien Leith may not be an Australian citizen, but the nation has adopted the Irishman as its own, crowning him this year’s Australian Idol.
The singer-songwriter beat 17-year-old Darwin songbird Jessica Mauboy for the title at the Sydney Opera House last night.
The 30-year-old lives in Sydney with his Australian wife Eileen and their toddler son Jarvis and attracted the majority of the reported one million votes cast in the past week.
Before auditioning for Idol, Leith had struggled to score anything more than a gig singing at a Sydney bowling club but last week gave up his job in a chemist shop to concentrate on making the big time.
His debut single, Night of My Life, was last night available for download.
Leith, who has also written a novel and four plays, beat 25,000 hopefuls to the title and won a recording contract, a car and a year in the spotlight.
His win made big news in Ireland, with several Irish journalists flying into Sydney to cover his story.
Mauboy, who is of Aboriginal and Indonesian descent, has a voice which has been compared with Mariah Carey’s, albeit with a slight country twang. She said last night that she was considering leaving Darwin to pursue a music career but also wanted to finish school.

As a West Aussie, I was keen to see Damien's photo on the front cover of the West Australian this morning. I was very disappointed with this small article on the third page!! Calling him an Irish Man didn't give him the credit he was due - also saying he worked in a Chemist Shop.
GET THE CRICKET OFF THE FRONT PAGE - PUT DAMIEN WHERE HE BELONGS!!
Shame, The West Australian, Shame!!
