HE survived his first day as Australian Idol on one hour's sleep, but the dream run for Damien Leith kept up at pace yesterday - with "everyone but Tic Tacs" calling his new management to book the star.
The 31-year-old Irishman told Confidential he was "still in shock" after beating Darwin schoolgirl Jessica Mauboy - the bookies' favourite - to this year's title.
While 70 per cent of the wagers taken by Centrebet had Mauboy home in the grand final, Leith came from behind in a flurry of voting late on Sunday afternoon to clinch the Sony BMG recording contract.
The Newtown father of one wasted no time starting his new gig, confirming he quit his pharmaceuticals job last week and will film a videoclip in Sydney's inner west today.
His workload put paid to a planned dinner with his Irish family last night. They are due to fly home today but have had little time to celebrate together.
"The party after the show was so full on, I didn't really get the time to spend with my family. But they've had a hell of a time, it's been a great time for us all," Leith said.
Runner-up Mauboy and Idol pin-up Dean Geyer are also set to score contracts after Sony BMG boss Denis Handlin told Confidential he would "definitely" speak to both.
Fittingly the after-party fare had a decidedly Irish taste with beef and Guinness pies the order of the day.
Idol co-host James Mathieson also impressed guests with his musical stylings, taking over the decks at The Basement. Earlier Marcia Hines' daughter Deni had tongues wagging, kissing a mystery man on the steps of Sydney Opera House
