"HE went from TV show contestant to bona fide recording artist in a mere seven days.
Damien Leith, who last Sunday beat Territorian Jessica Mauboy to win Australian Idol for 2006, was expected to take the No. 1 position in the ARIA singles chart released today, with his debut single, Night Of My Life.
It has already been certified gold and was nearing platinum status, record-industry sources said. On Friday, it was the No. 1 most-added song on radio and 12th on the airplay chart, a "phenomenal" result, his record company, Sony BMG, said.
But for Leith, the reality of it all is still sinking in. "It's surreal," he said after receiving a plaque for gold sales of 35,000 units.
Leith also had another reason to celebrate: not only was it his wife Eileen's birthday on Thursday, but he also got to spend a night in with her - a rare occurrence since the Idol juggernaut caught him in its path.
"We've been doing a lot of celebrating lately so a quiet night to ourselves with our feet up is precious," he said."
