MILLTOWN residents gave a lively send-off last week to Paul Leith, father of Australian Idol finalist Damien, prior to his departure for Sydney to join Damien’s mum and sister, who have been in Australia for the last couple of weeks.
The Australian Idolcontest is now down to just two, Damien and Australian teenager Jessica Mauboy (17). The two have very different styles, with Jessica, who is part Aboriginal, appealing very much to a younger audience. Meanwhile, Damien’s musical versatility has won him fans across the whole spectrum, despite his having begun the contest as very much an outsider.
It will all be down to the tele-vote following the final performances of both artists at the Sydney Opera House next weekend. A win would mean likely stardom for Damien (30), who is married to Eileen, with a baby son, Jarvis. Even is he doesn’t win, the enormous exposure should mean a lot of future opportunities for Damien.
A chemist by occupation, he may be faced with the big decision between returning to his work with a Sydney pharmeceutical company or going or switching to musical performance as a career.
The Channel 10 show has drawn huge audiences, with fans here following the contest week by week on the internet. While Damien’s family lives in Milltown, his mum, Angela (nee Tidd) is a native of Pairc Mhuire, Newbridge and the family is well known for its musical talent.
The gathering at the Mill-town Inn on Tuesday night last included a huge number of neighbours and friends from both Milltown and Newbridge and it was filmed by Channel 10, to form part of the backdrop to the final Australian Idol programme.
Meanwhile, members of Newbridge Town Council offered their own congratulations and good wishes to Damien, when they met last week.
