DANIEL Stapleton was completely “gob smacked” on Saturday night, when his brother-in-law Damien Leith was announced the 2006 Australian Idol on Network Ten.
The competition finale at the Sydney Opera House was between Northern Territory high school student Jessica Mauboy and Irish-born falsetto singer Damien.
The seconds leading up to the crowned winner were watched by millions of Australian fans on television and 6000 people live.
Although Damien was not born in Australia, he now holds on to a secure recording contract - with Sony BMG - to kickstart his singing career.
Mr Stapleton said he could not make it to the event, but he cheered on the close family member with friends from his couch in Bundaberg.
“It was surreal when he won, I could not believe it, I just jumped in the air with excitement and everyone at home was so happy for him,” he said.
Mr Stapleton said his tireless efforts over the past few weeks to encourage Bundaberg residents to vote, finally paid off.
“A lot of people in Bundaberg were behind him which was great, I really want everyone to know I appreciate their support for Damien,” he said.
He said Damien’s single would be released today, but it was different to the normal idol style.
“It will have the song he sung on television the other night, Come to me, but it will also have one of his own original songs he wrote himself, which is not normally done,” he said.
Mr Stapleton said Damien had put in a lot of work to get to where he was today.
