He did it. The Inner West's Damien Leith has been crowned the 2006 Australian Idol winner.
After the announcement at the Sydney Opera House last Sunday a humble Mr Leith said "this has been the greatest, greatest time of my life".
He paid homage to the legion of fans who voted to make him this year's Idol.
"The Australian community has really gotten behind me," he said.
"This is my dream and the public has made it happen.
Mr Leith's journey through Idol has been filled with high notes, partly due to his signature falsetto.
The 30-year-old chemist, who was apprehensive about entering the competition because "my own pride meant I didn't want to get shot down by the judges" has won a Sony record contract and a new car.
Like his fellow Idol winners - Guy Sebastian, Casey Donovan and Kate DeAraugo - his first single "Night of my Life" is expected to be a number one chart topper.
