He did it. Stanmore's Damien Leith has been crowned the 2006 Australian Idol winner.
After the announcement at the Sydney Opera House last Sunday a humble Mr Leith said "this has been the greatest, greatest time of my life".
He paid homage to the legion of fans who voted to make him this year's Idol.
"The Australian community has really gotten behind me," he said. "This is my dream and the public has made it happen. The support I've had from the Australian and Irish community has been absolutely amazing".
Of the standing ovation he received last Sunday for his rendition of "Nessun Dorma", the famous tenor aria from Puccini's Turnandot, he said: "win or lose - that was definitely a moment for me".
Mr Leith's wife, Eileen Stapleton also paid tribute to all of her husband's supporters, particularly the Inner West businesses that got behind him on his Idol journey began.
"People would come up to him and be like 'we love you, you're an Inner Westie'," Ms Stapleton said.
"The support has been great, the local community has really got on board and backed Damien and Marrickville Metro [shopping centre] has been wonderful putting signs and posters everywhere in support of him.
Mulligan's Irish Restaurant in Chippendale is another local business that backed Mr Leith from the start, even donating all its tips to vote for him. "His voice is one of the best I have ever heard, he is such a great ambassador for Australia," Ealleen Donaghey, the owner of Mulligans said.
Mr Leith's journey through Idol has been filled with high notes, partly due to his signature falsetto. When he sang a rendition of Roy Orbison's "Crying" it even attracted the attention of the Orbison family.
The 30-year-old chemist, who was apprehensive about entering the competition because "my own pride meant I didn't want to get shot down by the judges" has won a Sony record contract and a new car. Like his fellow Idol winners - Guy Sebastian, Casey Donovan and Kate DeAraugo - his first single "Night of my Life" is expected to be a chart-topper.
