Damien Leith baby secret revealed
December 19, 2006 12:00am
HE thought winning Australian Idol was a high point, but life just got even better for Damien Leith.
The Irishman and his wife yesterday announced they were expecting their second child, on the same day Leith's debut album soared to the top of the charts.
The huge 89,257 sales figure for The Winner's Journey was poles ahead of recent Idol winners.
In one single week, Leith's album sold more units than all the Casey Donovan and Kate DeAraugo albums fobbed off since their releases.
An ecstatic Leith, with wife Eileen Stapleton and their 15-month-old son, Jarvis, left Australia on Sunday to spend Christmas with family in Ireland.
"A big year, it's been a big year," Leith said.
"This has just topped off the year."
Despite rumours that Eileen was expecting their second child, the pair kept their secret from everyone except immediate family in the lead-up to the Australian Idol final last month.
"It happened right smack in the middle of Idol," Leith said.
The Winner's Journey jumped to No. 1 on the ARIA album charts yesterday after debuting at No. 3 behind The 12th Man and U2.
The sales bode well for Leith's account balance. With two of the tracks on the album being his own, the royalty cheques will be hefty.
Leith's debut single, Night of My Life, remained at No. 1 for the third week in a row.
During his three-week trip home, Leith will launch the single in Ireland with a promotional tour.
He will be heading back into the recording studio to begin tracks on his real debut album with his newfound mentor and John Farnham's producer, Ross Fraser, in mid-January.
Leith is also shopping around for interest in a fictional travel novel (in the vein of The Beach) he wrote a few years back.
Could the good luck continue?
