*methinks another candidate for eating their hat along with a side dish of humble pie*Music Industry News by Ben Butler Tuesday, Dec 19 2006 www.messandnoise.com/news/469986COLUMN’S IDOL ERROR Last week, some editions of this column suggested that the fact Idol winner Damien Leith’s The Winner’s Journey (Sony BMG) didn’t make number one on debut indicated it had flopped. Wrong: it had been only been in stores since Thursday, more than half-way through the chart week. It’s number one this week and has been accredited four times platinum - that’s 280,000 copies in shops. A retail source says copies were flying out so quickly that many stores ran dry. Lame-ish points in this column’s defence: even if it had been released on the Monday, Leith still wouldn’t have outsold last week’s number one, The Twelfth Man’s Boned (EMI). And Idol winner sales are, over time, declining. In New Zealand, winners don’t even get an automatic record contract anymore; instead, they get a car (which might be worth more than a record contract, actually). **hmmm what did they actually say the week earlier???: see below*** Tuesday, Dec 12 2006 Music Industry News by Ben Butler
IDOL COMES THIRD And is the Idol franchise finished as a record company money-spinner? Winner Damien Leith’s The Winner’s Journey (Sony BMG) debuted at number three this week, beaten by Billy Birmingham and U2.

Declining? WTF? Do they actually have the statistics for the past two years? And what does NZ Idol have to do with ours anyway? Lame-ish is right - unreservedly lame would be even more accurate.

They can't have been looking at Damien's recent record breaking sales figures. I'm meant to believe this person is an experienced music journalist? LMFAO!

Experienced... nooooo. This reminds me more of that schoolyard bully/know-it-all type who, when faced with indisputable evidence that he is wrong, points his finger accusingly and howls, "B-b-b-b-but... you're just stupid!" That little snippet is, if nothing else, a very good lesson in how not to save face gracefully.

Dede, please correct me if I'm wrong: "even if it had been released on the Monday, Leith still wouldn’t have outsold last week’s number one"Winners Journey was on sale for 2 days in the eyes of the Aria charts, and sold 18,000ish copies? 12th man sold 42,000ish copies? And was on sale for at least 5 days? (released on the monday?) Sounds pretty close to me...... I look forward to their next column when this little comment: "And Idol winner sales are, over time, declining."should also recieve the same back-pedalling treatment? *coughtwohundredthousandsalescough*

So, just because they admitted they were wrong, they think we'll listen to them now? Does our treatment of other bullsh**ers like Mark give them any indication of that? Whatever. I couldn't care less. And using the word lame-ish? How unprofessional. Someone's just being spiteful now

The twelfth man albums always come out at Christmas and always do well because they're recorded specifically for the Christmas season and they're about as much a part of Christmas as stockings and mince pies. And U2 could bring out a paper bag and it would do exceptionally well, so well done to Damo for doing so well against these two big institutions anyway. Even though this journo back tracked and corrected himself, he still wasn't telling us anything news worthy or ground breaking.

Ah, I enjoyed the admission that the excuses were "lame-ish". Kudos for that at least.
