Australian Idol Damien Leith, with Jssica Malbouy, enters the Opera House on Sunday.
HE MAY be the newest Australian Idol but Damien Leith is no overnight pop sensation.
This could be the key to his future success, according to the friends and former bandmates who gathered at the Gaelic Club on Sunday to celebrate his win.
The Stanmore resident will now head into the recording studio to work on his debut album, which will include his own songs.
``I do a lot of writing, it's important for me,'' he said. ``Ultimately it will make the album my sound, I think it's a good thing.''
David Jeffrey who played in the band Byron with Leith a few years ago, described him as a talented musican, singer and songwriter.
``His voice is amazing,'' Jeffrey said. ``It may just have been a pub in Balmain with 20 or 30 people but he would shut them all up.''
Derek Cleary recruited Leith as lead singer of the band Revelate based on a performance he saw at the Balmain Bowling Club.
``The one thing in the band was that Damien wanted to play his own stuff,'' Cleary said. ``From there to the steps of the Opera House, it is unbelievable.''
The first winner of Australian Idol Guy Sebastian said Leith had brought a Coldplay sound to the competition.
``He's very talented and very musically mature,'' Sebastian said. ``He's also a really endearing, down-to-earth, lovely man.''
Leith believes his success is due to the community's support. ``Ultimately, that has been the thing that has shone through. The public made it happen. That is fabulous.''

Comment - now I know what "Byron" was a reference to in the Verge website where I found the song "Fool".
