Damien's moment of truth arrives
By Conor McHugh:
It's all over bar the shouting for Damien Leith – and the voting.
He and fellow Australian Idol finalist Jessica Mauboy gave their final competitive performances last Sunday night watched by millions down under.
Both sang 'Night of My Life' which will be released as a single by whoever wins.
All this week, Australia has been voting for their preferred performer and the final tally will be announced this coming Sunday night at the Sydney Opera House.
The pair will perform the song again next Sunday, as well as a couple of songs of their choice, before the voting closes, but it is expected that the performances last Sunday evening will be the deciding factor.
"He's very tired," Damien's friend Dave Kiely told the Leinster Leader. "They're both very tired. They spent the days before the show doing press and media interviews.
"He's very happy with his performance on Sunday night. They both had to sing the same song but they put their own take on it.
"Despite the tiredness, they're both in great form and can't wait for the Opera House on Sunday."
Since the start of the competition the contestants have been locked into the Australian Idol house. "He says that every time he leaves it, he's mobbed by the press and the media," Dave explained.
Several members of Damien's family have flown to Australia to support him. His mother, Angela, has been there for a number of weeks. His father Paul and brother Darren arrived last Thursday evening, courtesy of Channel 10, which hosts the competition. Damien's Sister Áine and his other brother, Paul are staying in Ireland.
Damien has been involved in music for years, and has been living in Sydney since 2004 where he works as a quality assurance manager for a pharmaceutical company. He was also involved in gigging there. He and his wife Eileen have one son, Jarvis.
