Damien should get a bit too because of his original songs on the album/single.

Adam Reily is the hit machineBy Peter Holmes December 31, 2006 12:00 www.news.com.au/sundaytelegraph/story/0,22049,20991956-5006009,00.html FROM a tiny studio in Kings Cross, professional songwriter Adam Reily is spending his summer hunched over a keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike. Hit-maker Reily, the man behind Damien Leith's No. 1 single Night Of My Life and Shannon Noll's anthemic Lift, is one of few Australians making a living writing songs for other performers. He has also written songs for Idol alumni Guy Sebastian and Anthony Callea. Unlike singers, who must pay back recording and marketing costs before earning a cent, Reily is paid a royalty from the first CD sold. Reily wrote his first song - Things Just Aren't The Same - after being dumped by a girlfriend in Year 12. "She started dating another guy in my year, and I didn't deal with it well at all. "I quit high school, and was writing songs every day and night. I couldn't stop.'' In the early 1990s, Reily scored a recording contract with Roadshow. "They put a lot of faith in me; I was only 21. They spent more than $200,000 to produce an album. "I was a total pig. I thought I was a genius, and was going to be a pop star. I released one single, which got to No. 51 on the chart. The second single never came out.'' Reily later toured with Girlfriend, an all-female pop group, before drifting into advertising. "I'd resigned myself to writing dog-food commercials,'' he says. Five years ago, Reily met writer/producer Bryon Jones, formerly of '80s dance-pop band The Rockmelons, who was working with the manufactured group Bardot. "There wasn't a lot of work around. We did some stuff with Sophie Monk and Human Nature - and then Idol started. It was a godsend.'' Reily says the ideal pop song should run about three minutes, 40 seconds and the first chorus should kick in before the one-minute mark. Songwriters typically share about $1.80 for each album sold. On Damien Leith's combined CD/DVD Winner's Journey, there are 30 songs, including three versions of Reily's Night Of My Life. Winner's Journey is expected to sell about 350,000 copies, for which Reily could expect to earn more than $60,000, plus significant income from the single version of Night Of My Life and radio airplay. If he gets to place multiple songs on forthcoming albums from Dean Geyer and Jessica Mauboy, the figure could balloon into hundreds of thousands of dollars. "I probably squander my money a bit, but I'm just happy knowing I've got work,'' Reily says. "I still remember having to ask my mum to drop off $3 a few years ago so my flatmate and I could drive across the Harbour Bridge.'' Could you write a hit song for an Idol? What do you think of Adam Reily's work? Have your say ..

Thanks for this, Belle and Dede. Yes, I am wondering too, Braffy...with both Sky and Come to Me on there, D's royalties should be equal to Adam Reilly's I would think??

I wonder does Damien get anything for arranging NOML into a song someone would actually want to listen to? The original version (which i'm presuming is the one Jess sang) was woeful IMHO. It's formulaic crap. Damien's acoustic version is the best and I place all the credit with him not this paint-by-numbers songwriter.

Hmmm, that doesn't make sense. If the rate is $1.80 per unit, and the estimated total album sales is 350,000, he should expect to make $630,000, not $63,000. In 2003, Guy Sebastian earned approximately $2.60 (a music industry executive told me this) per unit of every album sold in artist's royalties, which makes sense as BMG paid him and Shannon $1million each (or more) in royalties for both their albums and singles. Assuming that rates have stayed the same, I estimate Damien to earn $2.60 + ($1.80 x 2) = $6.20 per unit sold (Damien has 2 original songs on the album). Therefore, if Damien sells the anticipated 350,000 units, that would be 6.2 x 350,000 = $2, 170,000. By my reckoning, he has already earned a guaranteed 210,000 x 6.2 = $1,302,000. *Cel- e - brate good times, come on!!!*

Thanks for ze interesting article! Lets do some maths... If songwriting royalties are around $1.80 a release....30 songs on the Winners Journey (I guess that includes the DVD)...so D has songwriting credit for 3 (sky live on cd, sky live on dvd, come to me)... thats 18c per CD sold....so on 200,000 winners journey sales so far, D would have earned a tidy $36,000...if these figures are to be believed in the article...and my maths is sound So...if D were to release a fully self-penned studio release...that would mean the full $1.80 royalty allowance goes his way...and lets say if he sold 100,000 copies...that would be $180,000!!! Heeeeeeee!! (D, you are seriously getting my Idol phone bill in the mail now! ) This is all using the figures from the article btw...I have no idea what royalties actually are....someone please correct me if they have different figures!

The article is saying $1.80 is the songwriting royalties for the ENTIRE ALBUM...that gets divided amongst ALL the songwriters...so Adam Reillys (and D's) is a percentage of $1.80...3 out of 30 songs, thats 10%.....18c And yes...I think D's royalties would equal Adam's on Winners Journey

Hey winter, please refer to my post above. Adam Reilly would only earn royalties for the songs he composed, not for stuff like Crying, Hallejah etc. which makes up the bulk of the cd/dvd. Therefore, I'm assuming it's $1.80 per song composed. This is separate from the artist's royalties that Damien would also earn.

CDs would have to cost over $50 at least each for record companies to make anything...! Every song on Winners Journey has been composed by someone...royalties are still paid on all (not sure about Nessun Dorma...not sure when estates run out) The article talked about a SHARE of $1.80 per release....

oh okay, by bad! Wow, that's a piddling amount for songwriters' royalties.

Don't forget though that Damien will still get his artist's share, on top of any songwriting royalties! So that would be (2.6 + 0.18) x no. of units sold.

oh okay, by bad! Wow, that's a piddling amount for songwriters' royalties. yes it is! IF the articles figures are to be believed...journos do get it wrong but I believe songwriting royalties are far greater than performers ones...its pretty much the only way to make money on a release. But see my figures above if D does an entirely self-penned release....the figures get much better

Hey guys, you beat me to it! I've scanned the article from the paper, there's a pic of Damien (doing a nose scrunch! ;D ) and a comparison of the songs Adam has written in the sidebar. Interesting insight into the industry Keep in mind this is a comparison of only the songs Adam has written

In other bits & bobs from the Telegraph: * In an article on what's in & what's out by Andrew Mercado, Dicko is in and 'King Kyle' in out. Mark is so out, he wasn't even in the article ;D * From the music segment written by Peter Holmes, on the hottest cd releases for 2007: "In a sharp marketing maneouvre, Song BMG is double-dipping with talent quest victor Damien Leith. "His CD/DVD The Winner's Journey is already four times platinum (280, 000 copies ordered by retailers), while his debut album proper, due for release early in 2007, will likely do similar business. Ker-ching!" Hallelujah, and amen to that!
