Idol chart overload
January 02, 2007 12:00am
STAY tuned for the charts to be clogged with even more Australian Idol faces.
Winner Damien Leith, Jessica Mauboy and Dean Geyer are all gearing up to release albums.
And the Sony BMG signees may not be the last from series four.
Sony BMG chief Denis Handlin has hinted quirky balladeer Bobby Flynn may soon be with the label.
"He certainly hasn't been overlooked and is definitely on our radar," Handlin reportedly said.
Flynn's fans can buy his debut four-track EP with his band, the Omega III, being marketed by indie label Regent Road Enterprises.
He also appears on a compilation album, The Hopesmiths Project (www.hopesmiths.com), launched last week.
All money raised is funnelled to Childhood Cancer Support.
Flynn appeared on The Panel's Christmas Wrap , played at a folk festival in Queensland and a carols night, with the annual Australia Day Live concert in Canberra also on the agenda.
In other Idol updates, Albury schoolgirl Lisa Mitchell wants to finish school and go backpacking overseas before launching into a singing career.
Chris Murphy is back in Perth and performed with his Idol brother, Courtney Murphy, and their band Murphy's Lore in a pub last Friday.
Ricki-Lee Coulter, a contestant in 2005, is about to head overseas to write solo material and is to get hitched in September.

Good stuff...I can just see Bobby at Woodford, and being Bobby, just delighted to be there because of the extra gigs he gets. I can remember 2 am there one New Years morning about...oh...7 years ago, sitting on a blanket on the hill under the stars, listening to Alex Lloyd, followed by George. Woodford launches lots of careers, or certainly kickstarts them along.
I really liked Bobby, I must admit...but then, as you can tell, I am into the slightly alternative stuff too. It was so refreshing to actually see someone in that style even get into the top 12.
As for Lisa Mitchell....I think thats a veeeeryyyyy wise move.

I think Bobby is rather unlikely to choose to sign with Sony BMG - more likely mushroom/universal or something more independent.

Great to hear so much interest in Bobby - he wasn't a favourite of mine from the start of the series, but he was the only one I really missed after they were eliminated. I'm glad that Idol has, rather than destroying his credibility, opened some more opportunities to him. Can't see him bothering with SonyBMG myself either, but I'm sure he'll make the most out of whatever direction he goes in.
As for Lisa, I'm glad she's not rushing into her career - I think she has real potential to do something good with her music. The backpacking thing does make me giggle though. Why does everyone seem to think that backpacking is the way to learn all there is to know about life?
Hopefully now Chris and Courtney start to get some more notice, now they've both been on Idol! I'd love to see what they're like in their band.

Hopefully now Chris and Courtney start to get some more notice, now they've both been on Idol! I'd love to see what they're like in their band. Hi Kamitsuki, I was lucky enough to see Courtney play with his band Murphy's Law on New Years Eve at the Perth Zoo. Unfortunatley Chris wasn't there as his wife is expecting her baby anytime this week! But Courtney had a light hearted dig at him for coming 4th, not 3rd!! Courtney was great, he sang She Will Be Loved, and Billy Fields, You Weren't in Love With Me, from his Idol days, plus Evie in reference to Chris, as well as an amazing version of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights - and he really sustained the high notes for the whole song!!!! Damien is not the only one who can sing falsetto!!! It was a fun night! ;D

Wow! I have heard very few versions of Wuthering Heights that didn't make me wince (I don't mean the original, of course! ;D ) it's one of the hardest songs to sing I know. And Ricky Lee, I didn't know she could write! She was one of my favourites from...whichever series she was in...series 2 I think? I thought she was seriously going to win. But yeah...Damien! Woo hoo!
