Note: A somewhat backhanded compliment
Another Aussie flop 65 words 18 December 2006 The Guardian 11 English © Copyright 2006. The Guardian. All rights reserved.
Damien Leith, winner of this year's reality TV blockbuster Australian Idol, is currently No1 in both the single and album charts in Australia. But he was born in Dublin, raised in County Kildare, and his music career on this side of the world brought one Irish top-100 single. Still, better than anything they've got over there.

I don't understand it either Hyp. I suspect the writer is trying too hard to be funny and has as a result produced something completely incomprehensible. Amusing, but other than that it gets a 'meh' from me.

At first I thought it was a backhanded compliment. Now that I read it again (especially the headline) I think it was a rather lame attempt by a talentless hack to put Damien AND Australia down at the same time. Whatever. He or she must have a pretty boring life.

These are the people who gave us The Spice Girls - what more needs to be said? Oh, don't forget Blazin' Squad and Lady Sovereign. I just say he's jealous. Poor bloke probably wouldn't know musical talent if it crashed down on him like an asteroid from space... Which is not a bad idea...

hmmm...the episode in the Irish charts was..what...ten years ago, or more??
1. That was a band, not him solo 2. He has matured quite a bit since then...just look at the difference between the first and last weeks of Idol alone.
Dorks.

Apparently there was some trashy media in Ireland with Louis Walsh (the big record executive) branding Damien a "flop" because he had sold 89,000 not more records - ie he was going on the old figures before Damien hit no. 1 and without knowing how much he has sold since then and how huge he has been here in Australia. Get your facts straight next time buster. Thanks gluttonmutton for the post. We take bad news rather well don't you think...

*tries to contain anger* the writer of this *cough* piece of *cough* "journalism" is a complete and utter toss pot *apologises for outburst*. As someone else has so kindly pointed out (thank you) his previous entry on the charts back home occurred when: A). He was in a band with his siblings B). He had not as yet acquired the level of maturity or life experience he now has. Which in turn will serve to enhance the quality of his music/artistry.
To each their own, but perhaps this "reporter" would be better gathering all their facts before hand???

That was bizarre. I just went and had a look for the quote and couldn't find it, considering I was looking in the music section. I searched archives and found it in the sports section(!?!) It was towards the bottom of the story titled "McGrath proves youth is no substitute for experience" and was sandwiched between the 'Quote of the Day' and the 'Number of the Day'. Since England was about to lose the Ashes, I would attribute the remark to sour grapes. I think that it was a dig at Australians not Damien. Maybe it made the poor things feel a little better.
