MUSIC from homegrown artists was among Australia's biggest sellers last year, ARIA's end-of-year charts show.
Released yesterday, the annual list of the top 100 singles for the first time included both sales and downloads, with a separate chart of the most downloaded songs from April last year.
Half of the singles in the top 10 were recorded by Australian artists, with 23 local artists in the year's top 100 singles.
Seven of the top 10 albums were by Australian artists.
With 10 weeks in the number one spot, making it the longest running top single of 2006, British singer-songwriter Sandi Thom topped the singles chart with I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair).
Australian dance act TV Rock featuring Seany B was second with Flaunt It, with local acts Youth Group, Young Divas and Lee Harding also making the top 10.
Australian Idol runner up Shannon Noll laid claim to three singles in the top 100.
While James Blunt topped the ARIA list of Top 100 albums, Australian artists filled three of the top five, with Human Nature at number three for Reach Out: The Motown Record, Wolfmother's self-titled debut album fourth and Australian Idol winner Damien Leith fifth with The Winner's Journey.
ARIA's John Parker said: "To see Australian acts so heavily represented is a nod to quality and appeal of our local talent."
Nicole Hart, who compiled the charts, said the inclusion of downloads indicated their importance in the industry.
The top two most downloaded songs also were from Australian artists: Youth Group's Forever Young and Eskimo Joe's Black Fingernails Red Wine.
