Australian Idol, Australian Author February 12th, 2007 by ucicpress ucicpress.wordpress.com/ The cult of celebrity claims another willing victim as book publisher HarperCollins has signed Australian Idol winner, Damian Leith. By HarperCollins’s account, Leith first approached the publisher with a fictional effort in 2005, a year before he warbled his way into our collective hearts on the popular TV show last year. On receipt of the manuscript, HarperCollins’s fiction publisher Linda Funnel says she suggested a rewrite. Beret on scone and six-string slung over shoulder, Leith returned to his garret for some high-level soul-searching. Funnel extrapolates possibly a tad disingenuously: “Then the whole Idol thing happened and I thought the novel would be on the back burner. So it’s wonderful to have the chance to publish it now.” On the back burner? Sure. Like HarperCollins just gave up the ghost. The book is currently untitled, awaiting a re-badging from the HarperCollins crew. Maybe a title like A Song in My Heart would cash in on the singer’s fame be appropriate given the circumstances. Sadly, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is already taken. In October, I look forward to reading the fruits of Leith’s labour. Maybe. sour grapes? More like scepticism me thinks...but I've said my piece on that in this thread: www.dleithonline.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=media&action=display&thread=1171351246Thanks for all the info dede, but at this stage I'm going to resist responding to these blogs regarding the upcoming publication. Apart from the fact that I understand where they are coming from, I'm very interested to see the rest of the "communitys" responses, without having to react to additional comments by obvious Damien fans Also...I'm wondering whether blogs classify as Media for our archiving purposes? Theres bound to be a few more of them, particularly regarding the book....
