Network Ten and FremantleMedia Australia today announce the biggest national search ever for the fifth series of Australian Idol, to kick start on Saturday 3 March 2007 in the West Australian ‘gold town’ Kalgoorlie.
Producers hope to strike gold in Kalgoorlie on the first of 17 stops across Australia – on the road to find the next Australian Idol. As well as all state capitals, Idol will be returning to Darwin, Canberra and Newcastle for auditions. And for the first time auditions will be held in Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, Rockhampton, Wollongong, Launceston and Mildura.
“We’re sweeping across Australia with the most stops we’ve ever undertaken – we’re going to give as many singers as possible, aged between 16 and 30, the chance to live their musical dream. We want to continue to tap into the incredible depth of talent this country has and to further build on the wonderful platform our show provides for an unknown singer or songwriter. I look forward to our auditions, whether they’re straight out of school or been singing in local pubs for years, discovering original singer/songwriters and gifted voices is always exciting” said Australian Idol Executive Producer Greg Beness.
“2006 was a benchmark year for Australian Idol uncovering fantastic new Australian talent, Damien Leith’s chart success is the best result we’ve had to date, with at least six of the other top 12 finding themselves with recording contracts and management deals.
In 2007, the judging panel will be the strongest we’ve had, looking for unique talent and going further than ever before to find it. It’s going to be a thrilling series and all of us can’t wait for it to begin” said Stephen Tate Executive Producer Network Ten.
2007 also sees the return of controversial Ian “Dicko” Dickson to the judging chair, he joins Mark Holden, Marcia Hines and Kyle Sandilands.
The Australian Idol Grand Final televised in November 2006 averaged 2.2 million viewers, swept its timeslot in every major demographic taking a 66.9 per cent commercial share of the target 18-49 audience and 59.9 percent across all people.
Sunday night live performance shows averaged 1.62m viewers and Monday live verdict programs attracted average 1.49m viewers. The audience watching Sunday night shows grew 17.3 percent, while Monday shows jumped a huge 34 percent, making Australian Idol one of the most watched television shows of 2006.
Auditionees for Australian Idol must be 16 years or over and under 31 years of age on June 30, 2007.
2006 winner Damien Leith’s debut CD/DVD The Winners Journey, held the number one spot on the ARIA charts for five weeks consecutive.
Triple Logie winning Australian Idol (most popular reality program) has launched nine No. 1 recording artists: Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Paulini Curuenavuli, Cosima De Vito, Casey Donovan, Anthony Callea, Kate DeAraugo, Lee Harding Damien Leith and last year also saw the launch of the highly successful Idol girl group The Young Divas.
