what it's about is that people who see an opportunity take up the rights at a small price to the dot.com of the name of any potentially famous person, then see if their management will buy the rights off them for a fortune - basically it's "cyber-Squatting" - not very ethical but then it seems that a lot of people nowadays don't concern themselves wth ethics.

Jeez, $12,000 is a bit optimistic isn't it, seeing as Damien used to post here anyway? No wonder there aren't any bids - why buy something like that when this place is well and truly established as unofficially Leith-backed?

I'm very suprised that the Idol machine didnt buy the finalists .com domains when they reached Top 24....a bit of slack of them, no? The only people that could afford $12,000 would be Sony themselves, if they want it that bad. I know that Anthony Calleas official sony site is a .com.au, probably for this same reason! You need proof of name and ABN to register someones name as a .com.au - I know, I have one! But anyone can register anyones name as a .com..... I think cyber-squatters are pond scum ;D

Gah... I hate people who do this. It's quite unethical, I say. Well, I also think that 12 000 bucks is a big ask. Apart from Sony themselves, I don't know who will buy the domain (I assume Damien's domain will end with .com.au instead of .com?)

I'm also surprised that the Idol team didn't already buy the rights to the top 12 at least domain names - I think in the past they did (from memory anyway) - maybe they didn't worry as the talked about fanclub might end up being the official site.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I was going to go check if it was still available and buy it if it was. There only $9 or $10. I wouldn't have bought it to make money but to keep it away from those rip offs that resell them for thousands. I wouldn't have minded giving it to Damien if he wanted it but $12,000 woah, not sure if they'll get that much. Their clearly not a fan or they would use it to make a good site promoting D or just give it to him. It is his name afterall. I really would have thought idol would have thought of that and bought them all. They must already have domain names for all the official idol sites then.

Hopefully this forum can be the official one ^__^. I hate it when the original fanclub/fanforum do not get recognized -__-

Sony also seems to own Anthony's .com address (it redirects to his .com.au site). I'm thinking they may be considering promoting him worldwide in the future? I'm kind of interested in seeing if they do go for Damien's .com as well, for this reason. If I had the money I'd get it to give to him or for this forum, but it's unfortunately a bit out of my range. And most other people's really.

I'm a lawyer so I thought I'd add in a bit of info to this thread. Well, the first thing is that it is clear that Sony BMG has indeed bought Damien Leith's domain name - but only in the .au domain. I did a search of the ausregistry and came up with this Result for: damienleith.com.au
Domain Name: damienleith.com.au
Last Modified: 04-Sep-2006 05:33:06 UTC
Registrar ID: R00015-AR
Registrar Name: NetRegistry
Status: OK
Registrant: SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT (AUSTRALIA) PTY LIMITED
Registrant ID:
Registrant ROID: C4427304-AR
Registrant Contact Name: Craig Simmons
Registrant Email: domainnames.au@sonybmg.com
Tech ID: C0573762-AR
Tech Name: Dominic Main
Tech Email: dmain@netregistry.com.au
Name Server: ns2.uecomm.net.au
Name Server IP: 218.185.65.254
Name Server: ns1.uecomm.net.au
Name Server IP: 203.94.129.130Isn't that interesting! Now, to do that, Damien would have had to sign a contract with Sony BMG permitting them to do that because it is using his own name. The weird thing is why they haven't done the same in the .com domains - and the answer is probably because it costs a lot more as the first thing, and he probably has not taken any steps to trademark his name as a brand (which helps a lot). There are tribunals for fighting over who gets the domain name rights to a person's name - so just selling it on Ebay aint' going to be the final word on this.

Thanks for looking this up - it's very interesting and I'm sure most of us didn't have a clue things were so complex. Hmm... what significant date was the 4th of September? It seems all the Top 12 domain names were gotten around that date, so it must have been on or after Wildcard results night? (Now I'm doing some poking around on the topic... this stuff is really interesting! )
