Big Night In - Interview with Damien and Jess
John Foreman [Standing off main stage, near backstage entrance] "Well, what an amazing journey it's been only a few days to go till the Grand Finale at the Sydney Opera House on Australian Idol. I'm thrilled to say that our Top 2 are with us - Jesica and Damien"
[Jess and Damien enter, Jess first. Jess has hair out long, curly, grey T shirt, blue jeans, sneakers. Damien next, wearing smart charcoal jacket, black T with yellow/green writing, grey jeans, leather pointed shoes very stylish.
Both are waving, Jess hugs John hello, then moves to set, Damien then shakes hand then hugs and chats something to JF, moves to set waving to front crowd, then goes to seat beside Jess so she is in the middle, and waves again and points at crowd to right of screen, still smiling. Jess smiling and mouthing "Wow"]
JF: "So how are you feeling? This must be incredible? [everyone hoots, claps, they smile]
Damien: "Feeling gooood. Feeling realy really good!"
Jess: "Yeh, we're pumping... [nods head, laughs, turns to Damien, laughs again, he starts to laugh, then he leans back and laughs more, a little knowingly, then Jess puts her hand across her mouth to stifle her reaction].
John: "It's such a long way that you've both come. I mean for you Jess, are you feeling homesick?
Jess: "I have been, coming from Darwin, it's such a small place. Like, all my family is from there. Yeh, I really do miss them and all my friends."
John: "And you Damien of course come from Ireland as you do..
[John is interrupted by *woop* from audience aka Damien Fan Forum members, ahem]
[John tries to speak again, meanwhile Damien smiles, turns to audience, raises his eyebrows in recognition at the attention, and goes a bit bashful]
[John tries to ask a question but someone [aka Popeye from the AI Forum] shouts out something [which was "We love you Damien"]..
John: "What's that, sorry?"
[Audience members repeat "Love you Damien"] [Jess smiles extra big and laughs]
John: "Oh, somebody in the audience loves you Damien, that's teriffic!"
Damien: [leans] "Well, that's what we like to hear!" [both Jess and Damien laugh again together]
[Fella from audience calls out "Love you Jess"] Jess says "Wooh"
Damien [laughs]: "There's a lot of love here in the room!"
[Camera cuts to Chris Murphy and Ricky Muscat in the audience - Chris is clapping and smiling, but Ricky is not, and is instead sucking a lollipop, which were handed out to the audience to keep the sugar/energy levels up during the taping]
John: “Very animated crowd. So you know, if you look back over the years of Guy Sebastian [Guy Sebastian Fan Forum members cheer] and of course, Casey and all the other winners from all over the world, how do you think, do you think there is a reflection of our society now, do you think Idol is that?”
Damien: “Ah, well, I’m a hundred percent believer in that. I mean, you know, from the Top 125 right down to this stage, there has been a broad mix of people from everywhere, all over the country and all over the world, really, so its fantastic. It’s great for me – from Ireland, to get an opportunity like this, but for everybody who was in it. It’s just incredible.“
John: “And the other thing that has happened is that the breadth and diversity of musical styles has been so great. Do you think [turning to Jessica] that has helped the show this year?”
Jess: “I really think so, especially this year. There’s been, you know, a bit of variety, and its kind of cool to see that and [gestures to Damien] myself and Damien we have our own style”.
John: “Absolutely. And can we set the record straight. There have been al these rumours about records deals, and all that sort of thing. So what happened, you did win a competition, many, many years ago…?”
Jess: “Ah, yeh, it happened in 2004, I was only 14, and um, I really liked country – [turns to audience] I still like country – yeh [turns back] I grew up with it anyway, so... I kind of won it [laughs] overall, it was different ages and..
John: “It was some years ago”.
Jess: “Yeh, it was, and everybody’s like freakin’ out, and thinking that I have like a record deal”
John: “But you don’t have a record deal”
Jess: [shakes head, still smiling] “No I don’t”.
John: “Thanks, I just wanted to clarify that.”
John: “And finally, you Damien, I mean, an incredible journey, did you think that when you entered the competition you would end up as one of the finalists [Damien shakes head] at the Sydney Opera House?”
Damien: “Never. Not in a million years. When I entered it I didn’t’ even think I’d get to the next stage and you know ever since its been just a week by week situation. Yeh, it’s just amazing, we’re having a great week [gestures and looks at Jess, smiling, who laughs and says “oh yes”] we’re having lots of fun, chilling out a bit and looking forward to Sunday – it’s going to be a ball [Jess smiles and nods in agreement].
John: “it’s going to be a sensational final to what’s been an incredible series – want to congratulate you both for making it this far. Don’t miss the Australian idol Grand Finale [Jess “Wooh”] [Damien “Wooh”] at the Sydney Opera House on the Ten Network around Australia …”
