My sister, who lives in Perth, was always a Dean fan and when he was eliminated wanted Jess to win. Fair enough. BUT.... I talked to her after Damien's win and OMG she was really miffed he won stating the the tired old arguments that he's not an Aussie and that a younger person should have won! She's my best friend and I love her to death but we're total opposites as you can see. heh. I have some serious converting to do here! LOL I already plan to email her with the ARIA charts denoting a red Aussie dot beside his name and I'm thinking I'll send her his CD and DVD. Hopefully, she'll be caught in his spell through listening to Night of My Life on the airwaves and see the light! hehe

Well I have a good friend who prefers Jessica over Damien because Jessica is 'so cute' and Damien is 'too old' - I'm rolling my eyes here. Anyway, just tell her that Idol apparantly lets Permanent Resident to enter. If they were looking for an Aussie winner in the first place then they would have made it clear in their rules. Your friend needs to get over it, really... why is it that those nay-sayers are so eager to reject PRs in Australian Idol (for God's sake it's not like he's winning a seat in the parliament) but when it comes to taxes, they are ever so happy to take their money. If she still can't accept it, then tough luck. I feel sorry for her because she must have been 'cheated' all throughout her life. Why is it called Survivor when no one dies? Why is it called hamburger when there's no ham? Why is it called Hawaiian Pizza when the pizza is not made in Hawaii? Why is it called eggplant when there is no egg? Why is it called pineapple when there is neither pine nor apple? And I can go on with my list

oh Lynne - poor you - that's family for you. I have had to put up with my 6 year old niece saying "urgh Damien, he's a disgusting old man - he's butt ugly and way too old....ergh....go Jess". Fortunately she doesn't complain that he isn't Aussie born considering that her Aunt (me) isn't. Also if she checks she'll find that her dad was born in Israel but migrated here when he was 3 and her grandma was born in Sweden but migrated here when she was 4. My questions to all those who complain about Damiens' nationality are: Are the Danish upset that their Crown Princess is Australian? Where was Nicole Kidman born? Where was Olivia Newton John born? Where was Russell Crowe born? How about Barnsey? Kylie Minogue, Rolf Harris, Germaine Greer - all call themselves Aussies but they choose not to live here anymore. Who's more Australian - someone who's born here or someone who chooses this as the country they want to grow old in? Hope that helps. At the end of the day though - not everyone can be born with the good taste that we have

Oh and my final point - the British had to put up with Gina G representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest some years ago. Did I hear any Poms complaining that an Aussie was representing the UK? - no - even though she was painfully crap.

It always amuses me when Dean fans become upset about Damien being "unAustralian" - perhaps they conveniently forget that Dean is South African. Anyway, it's totally irrelevant because they are residents and want to make their life here!

It's pathetic, that's what it is. Didn't hear any of these people complaining about an Irishman auditioning - only when the silly sods realised that Damien was darn good did they start to kick up a stink!
Last year when Kate won, some people said she was undeserving because her family was too well-off! It makes me laugh. People will make up any nonsense to make out they have the right to be nasty if something doesn't go their way. Most of them are just repeating what they've heard someone else say as justification, as well!
A message to all you sore losers out there, whatever your justification may be, WHATEVER! This isn't a freaking reality TV show where everyone is supposed to disappear after they've gotten their fifteen minutes - we're trying to launch music stars here. If you were fans of Jess's talent and not her looks, you'll be happy to know that she does have a record deal happening after all. Anyone who just wants the hot young people to win, kindly go watch your crappy Big Brother and leave the music fans alone. 'Kay?

Lynne,
this situation is very serious. Your sister needs help - urgently. But you will need to be careful how you offer it. A person as ill as your sister has probably entered the dangerous phase of being resistant to the very thing she needs in order to get well. (Think how soil resists water when it gets overly dry.)
If you try to flood your sister with healing, life-giving Damien-music-medicine, she may react with extreme resistance and become even more sick - in just the way that a starving person can die if they eat too much too soon.
I recommend small, subtle doses of Damo - always delivered without any hint of smugness. The medicine will be especially welcome if you combine it with abundant praise for Jess (as we know your sister likes that flavour). Delivered in this way, your sister will slowly but surely turn the corner and, before you know it, she'll be better than ever.
Damien-music-medicine has never been known to fail.

Tell your sister that shock horror Dean wasn't australian either (if she's saying Damien's not then neither is Dean)

Is this complaint ever going to go away? I am so over it. I think that crazyinlove and I get so annoyed about it because we're both naturalised. If he does well internationally they'll all shut up. BTW, as far as I know Russell Crowe doesn't even have Australian citizenship. What about all the foreign born athletes? I never noticed anyone complaining about Kostya when he was world champion or about a certain Russian born pole vaulter when she won the silver medal in Sydney. I'm only picking the obvious athletes because they have accents. (I'd like it to be bashing these stupid people)

And John Farnham wasn't naturalised when he won Australian of the Year. A quick hurry up fixed that! THE END

Hmmm, some very interesting angles on how to deal with my poor misguided sister in this thread. heheh I think the subtle approach mentioned so eloquently by Purple is the way to start but if that fails then bring out the big guns others have mentioned (particularly the John Farnham info. that's a beauty as my sister is a massive Farnham fan.) Thanks for the responses people it's given me much food for thought. I forgot about Dean being South African. heh

I heard a joke on the radio - When he's good, Russell Crowe's an Aussie, when he's bad, he's a Kiwi! Called his Aussie, Irish, whatever you like, but remember, whatever you call him, he's still the winner, and he's bloody fantastic!
