Aussies snapping up local artistsBy Kathy McCabe April 13, 2007 01:00am www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,23663,21548790-7484,00.html AUSSIE music fans are snapping up more local artist records than ever, according to the ARIA yearly sales report. While our industry has defied the international trend for declining CD sales, the value of the market is down 3 per cent due to heavy discounting. ARIA CEO Stephen Peach said sales of Australian records which made the top 100 charts jumped to 37.7 per cent last year from 27 per cent in 2005. This included seven albums by local artists Wolfmother, Eskimo Joe, The Veronicas and Rogue Traders. "The phenomenal support of Australian artists has been the key to Australia not experiencing a downturn in CD sales," he said. "That trend looks to be continuing this year with three local artists - Silverchair, the Cold Chisel tribute album and John Butler Trio - holding the top 3 on the ARIA charts." With albums from Missy Higgins, Thirsty Merc, Powderfinger, Grinspoon, Kylie Minogue, Crowded House, Delta Goodrem, Pete Murray, Damien Leith and Shannon Noll expected by the end of 2007, the industry is set for a bumper year. Digital sales quadrupled last year with almost 21 million tracks downloaded. But downloads still only constitute 5 per cent of total music sales. Mr Peach believes the broader range of genres offered by our artists spearheaded the local music boom. "If you look just at the seven Australian artists in the top 10, you've got Motown, pop and rock," he said.
