Oh bugger.. Trills well and truly beat me to it... I'm so slack. Was too tired last night but had a wake up call from the alarm security company from work which woke me up this morning. I say woke me up, but haven't had a lot of sleep... more like dozing and being in Damien heaven
This show for me was like a huge rainstorm after a drought - it was just the biggest relief
Gawd I was gobsmacked, Damien and the group were in fine voice and he was so funny.
I can't add much to Trills comprehensive report on the show so I'll just add a little of the other happenings.
Krissy, myself and my DD arrived early at Wellers and spied Damien through the rather large window near the stage.. he was fiddling with the equipment. Gave him a big wave as we walked past but by the time we got to the door and were shown to our table he was gone. (He probably figured if he didn't disappear he'd never get away! and people were starting to arrive for dinner)
Got to say a quick hello to Eric who came on to set up his guitar.)
Wellers is the BEST venue for intimacy. We were on the front table and having arrived early, Krissy and I snaffled the two seats at the front... I swear we were 4ft away from Damien once he came on stage
Could have almost touched him but showed remarkable restraint!
The almost painted on jeans, black and white converse shows, and that lovely grey shirt with the pintucks and black piping, also a black jacket for a while which he soon took of with prompting from us.
D was in fine form, the banter was funny, some lines we've heard before from other show reports but nonetheless they were still delivered by D as if he was saying them for the first time.
He mentioned the green mankini he got at the other show and said it was good that it sort of matched with the orange one he already had - now he only needed a white one to make up the irish flag!!
Also talked about the boxer shorts Dawn so they made quite an impression. All this got lots of laughs from the crowd.
D was in fine voice, but in TGTY we didn't get the high "NO".. a sort of sliding upwards "No" which was great, but I really missed the big note
However on FF we got the lot and it was just the best. I never imagined this song could sound so good accoustically.
I thought there was too much CTW but maybe they summed up the grey rinse set audience (apart from us
) and figured that's what they would like... and they did. Don't get me wrong but I would much rather listen to D's originals any day. Could have done without Annies song... he does it just beautifully but it was played at my SIL's funeral 30 years ago so brings back sad memories.
Beautiful was (ahem) BEAUTIFUL on keyboard. Love this song.
I'm not a real fan of Baby I love your way, but this version was just lovely and the blending of the voices of Eric, Indi and Damien was superb, as it was on several other numbers. Actually you can't believe the big sound delivered from three musical instruments along with the other three musical instruments (the voices). Gawd it was just blown away gorgeous.
Damien managed a little irish jig under difficult circumstances (there was about 2 square feet of stage available.)
He talked about the little boys, about the fact that he used to ride horses in Ireland and that everybody in his down was a jockey but he was too big!!
Good night on keyboard was just stunning.
There were pre-signed CD's available of Damiens and Indi's. The venue doesn't hold a lot of people but they did move quite a few copies... if you bought a CD you got a free poster so I got sucked in for another copy.. can justify it to give to DH for his car
Hallelujah - just mind boggling with an extended instrumental before the final chorus (have heard him do it this way before).
My DD was so impressed...she said she wants to bring her DH to a show, maybe next tour...will find it hard as her babysitter (me) will be at the shows too!!
I just wish I didn't have to wait until Saturday to see the next show at Village Green, but then I still have that and Lilydale, as well as Launceston next weekend to look forward to.
We had a quick chat to D after everybody else had left but he said he would catch up with us at the weekend... it was a little cool and wanted to save his voice, understandably.
One more thing, I gave him a gift of a jar of my melting moments.... he said to Eric, in a shocked sort of way, "We have some biscuits.... they're in the shape of...........biscuits"! Crack up. Maybe I should have made them like doodles or something... he probably would have liked that!
Just bloody marvellous.
My photos are pretty crap even from front row because every bloody picture there's either a mike or Eric's guitar in the way. Anyway my DD and Trills have fantastic cameras so as soon as I get DD's I'll post them on site. Might be a few days though.
I'm still floating around about three feet off the ground... absolutely gobsmacked
Sorry I had to come back and add the funny bit about Damien and Eric going to take up golf whilst in Melbourne. They want to get fit... that means going out on the golf course, getting a buggy (he he) and doing a Tiger Woods act. I can't remember the actual banter between the two of them but it was funny - with Damien denying any wrong doings, and Eric saying the opposite.... got a few laughs.
