By Conor McHugh:
The prospects of Milltown man Damien Leith winning Australian Idol in two weeks time are very real. And this week the Australian media were in Milltown working on background for the big final.
Leith is in an even better position this week after he trounced the opposition in the semi-final on Sunday night with his rendition of Puccini's soaring operatic number Nessun Dorma.
The judge's choice to win the competition outright, Dean Geyer was voted out, and only the bookies favourite Jessica Mauboy stands between Damien and glory.
Before Sunday night, the 30 year old married father of one had odds of 6/4 with bookies down under whereas Ms. Mauboy was at 5/6. But this could well change after Leith's vote topping performance on Sunday night.
In a text to his sister Aine, Damien revealed that he was over the moon.
Damien's Dad Paul and his brother Darren are being flown over to Australia by Channel 10, which hosts the competition, this week.
And a camera crew working for Channel 10 were in Newbridge and Milltown yesterday (Tuesday), interviewing local people and getting reaction to Damien's success.
They interviewed his teachers as well as going to the PBS in Newbridge. "Damien played Fagan in the show 'Oliver' years ago so they wanted to talk to Peter O'Reilly and Aine Loughran there," Dave explained.
Brenda Donoghue, herself a Newbridge woman, who works with RTE Radio 1's Mooney show was also in Milltown last night getting local reaction.
"He blew their socks off on Sunday night," said Dave. "He's the only Irishman to ever reach the final 12 of Australian Idol. The final will be on Sunday November 26 in the Sydney Opera House."
Throughout the competition Damien put his falsetto voice to good use, hitting the high notes in performances of songs such as Creep by Radiohead and Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, sung in the style of the late Jeff Buckley.
There was surprise news last week after Damien's performance the previous Sunday of Roy Orbison's Crying. The late singer's family have requested a copy of the performance and are considering possibly releasing it as a single in the US."There's a fantastic buzz around Milltown at the moment," Dave explained.
Damien has been involved in music for years, and has been living in Sydney since 2004 where he worked as a quality assurance manager for a pharmaceutical company. He was also involved in gigging there with a band called Revelate.
He and his wife Eileen have a son, Jarvis.
