Oz Idol props up music industry By Kathy McCabe February 22, 2007 12:00 www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,21269367-5001026,00.html ROCK may be the foundation on which the Australian music industry was built but pop - and Australian Idol - is keeping it alive at the cash registers, according to the ARIA No.1 Awards. Idol winners Kate DeAraugo and Damien Leith, and finalist Lee Harding scored No.1 awards for their respective debut singles which collectively spent 11 weeks at the top of the charts last year. Leith also picked up an award for his The Winner's Journey album which claimed the top spot for two weeks. Human Nature was the first artist to recognised for having two albums hit the top of the ARIA charts for their Motown tribute records, Reach Out and Dancing In The Streets. Rock bands Something For Kate Eskimo Joe and The Living End each scored a No.1 award for their albums, while Kasey Chambers added to her trophy collection for her sonic departure with the Carnival record. Billy Birmingham was the sole comedy contender, with The 12th Man album, Boned! his seventh No.1 record, making him the only artist in any genre to debut aty the top of the charts with every release. Hip hop breakthrough act The Hilltop Hoods (The Hard Road) and Youth Group (Forever Young) were the only Australian independent acts to achieve the chart-topping feat last year. Club act TV Rock were rewarded for their highest selling single Flaunt It, which spent a phenomenal five weeks at No.1 after exploding from the dancefloors onto the commercial airwaves. And Kylie Minogue, Crowded House and John Farnham were given gongs for their DVD No.1s.
