HORNSBY: There were many spine-tingling moments for singer-songwriter Damien Leith in the year he won Australian Idol including when he covered Roy Orbison’s classic, Crying.
While the audience and judges were blown away, Leith gained one particularly important fan with whom he has stayed in touch five years later.
“When Barbara Orbison called me after the show I was shocked but thrilled,” Leith said.
“She said how much she loved my version of her husband’s song. It was very bizarre.”
Since then the pair have stayed in touch and Mrs Orbison recently produced Leith’s fifth album, Roy, which celebrates the legendary singer’s 75th birthday by covering his songs with many collaborators.
Now Leith is in the middle of a tour of Orbison’s music and is gaining some new fans of The Big O along the way.
“There is definitely a different audience,” Leith said. “Some of the audience is mine but when I ask them if they’ve been to my shows before there isn’t a lot of response.”
The other new audience for Leith is the country crowd. On Roy he worked with The McClymonts and last week he played two consecutive shows in Wagga Wagga.
“The country side of my music keeps coming up and I always seem to do country events,” he said.
“I think it’s because I do a lot of acoustic stuff and of course with Roy’s music he had those leanings, being from Nashville.”
Despite all the hard work, Leith still credits Idol with getting him to where he is today.
While the show is not on anymore, Leith still acknowledges the format’s importance.
“I think it’s even more relevant now,” he said.
“The days of scouts roaming venues are gone. These shows create a great marketing campaign. People get to know you and come to like you. To start out fresh now is a tough thing.”
