2012 DLO BIRTHDAY PROJECT for SPECIAL OLYMPICS AUSTRALIA
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAMIEN!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAMIEN!!
Welcome to the 2012 DLO Birthday Project, now celebrating the 6th time DLO has supported the Special Olympics Australia at this time of year in honour of Damien’s birthday!
The idea for our project is a gesture from us to celebrate and honour Damien’s birthday each year. Direct contributions are made by those who wish to participate to the Special Olympics Australia organisation - for which Damien is a Special Ambassador. As the project progresses, the tally is updated regularly until we reach the grand total.
In honour of being a special leap year, it seemed a great completion date this year would be the LEAP DAY - FEB 29! The project will have tally updates every couple of weeks and everyone has until FEB 29* to take part and enjoy seeing the tally barometer rise! *extended til MARCH 11, see posts below
Your contributions go directly to the Special Olympics - no money is handled by anyone at the forum, and all contributions receive an official receipt and are tax deductible.
Over the past five years, DLO has raised over $9,245.00 for the Special Olympics via this project alone, and members here have also volunteered and participated in other activities and fundraising events for the SO. Maybe we can make the magic milestone of $10,000 this year!
Our first project helped to raise funds to support the SO athletes attend the 2007 World Games in Shanghai and last year our project helped support the fundraising for the SO athletes to attend the World Games in Athens!

If you prefer to appear anonymously on the donation page everyone is also welcome to post here that they have taken part if they wish, as this thread can also act as an honour role for the supporters.

A little quote here from the SO website about the very important service they provide, which your support will help continue:
Special Olympics is a worldwide movement that inspires people with an intellectual disability to reach their personal best through regular sport and competition.
It is not a single event and it is not just for the elite.
Instead Special Olympics volunteers provide sports opportunities for all people with an intellectual disability regardless of their skills, and they do this every week in communities right across Australia.
While some Special Olympics athletes strive to win medals, others enjoy the chance to get active, have fun, make friends and be part of a family. Whatever their motivation, we cater for them by providing meaningful sports programs delivered within a supportive environment where people with an intellectual disability are accepted and can feel proud.
People with an intellectual disability are often ridiculed, misunderstood, isolated or simply ignored. Yet, with the understanding and support of Special Olympics they discover the skills that allow them to improve their health, develop self-confidence and bring joy to themselves, their families and their community.
You can help us give more people with an intellectual disability a chance to achieve their personal best. Learn more about Special Olympics, be inspired by our athletes or best of all, get involved!
THANK YOU in advance for your support again this year for the project for the SO, anyone who has met any of the athletes or is connected with the SO knows exactly how much your support means to them!
