OK, Mothers' Day. This should have been Damien's best sales week for this album. Perhaps was, in volume terms, (I haven't seen the actual sales figures), but rising only three places from last week to #14 on the probably- mostly -irrelevant -but -the -only - comparative -measure- we -have ARIA album chart, sorry, doesn't make me jump for joy. The obvious question to ask is why isn't it selling like Roy did at the same time of the year? My first thought would be because it hasn't had the same measure of backing that that album received. Not as much TV exposure ie advertising time and not as much media exposure in general. I haven't seen one crit anywhere, for instance which strikes me as odd. Is the perception that this is merely another covers album (and of lesser vehicles than Orbison's music for D's voice) making it invisible to the music community? Is the fact that it has six originals on it not filtering through? Or, critics aside, are the public which appreciated Damien's rerecording of Orbison not as interested in the Wilburies members? It IS early days though. Roy took almost seven months to reach Platinum, after a sellout live tour, so maybe this one will gradually pick up too, although the next live tour doesn't start until September. The question is will this album remain in the charts until then? Somehow, I can't see that happening without more and continuous exposure. A live performance on Dancing With The Stars wouldn't hurt though, eh Channel 7? It amazes me that a contestant who helped them rate their socks off last season has not been given the chance to perform his new music, but others who haven't sold as well recently have/are.*coughOnyaSonycough* Hardly fair, I think. Roy Orbison was a freakish singer and so was his material. Damien had ( and is still having) well deserved, wonderful success in a difficult and shrinking music market with his interpretation of the Big O's music. To expect this album to emulate it is probably unrealistic, I guess. Gotta love both albums charting simultaneously though!

Agree with Trilly here and I did expect Now & Then to be in top 10 this week.
Damien has worked non stop with appearances everywhere in the last two weeks so he has done everything possible.
If Now & Then had been released before ROY then I think it would be out of the charts but in my opinion ROY captured the imagination of the public because of someone attempting to cover Roy Orbison and doing it so well that he was compared to one of the greatest singers of all time in his brilliant rendition of his songs.
Roy did receive a lot more media coverage and TV promotion that's true and I think Damien has won over a lot of new fans because of this album and the ROY concerts.
The Travailing Wilburies have no where near the appeal as Roy Orbison so it was never going the excite the masses in the same way I believe.
Having said that some of Damien's originals on this album are superb and he could release a album of his own songs with a few covers of a number of highly successful artist in his next as you can tell by the way his concerts are selling that he has a much larger fan base now then he had before ROY.
This is a good performance on the ARIA charts but because of ROY we now expect so much but before ROY we would be delighted with this I think.
A DWTS performance would certainly help and he should be there too --maybe being a judge on a channel 7 show would give some preferential treatment.

I thought Dancing With The Stars would have him as a guest singer because he was so popular last year, hopefuly they will still have him on. And how does a song (Beautiful) that has 90,000 views on YouTube from people just looking it up from the Estee Lauder ad, not get played on the radio. The Radio Stations should realise what goes on on their polls and get rid of them and just play good music.

Sorry about this post but i am really frustrated and cant imagine how D must feel. I have not heard one of D's songs on any of the popular FM radio stations in the last 3 weeks. I watch all the music video channels on Fox TV all day and never see any of his clips. It's RJ all over again. Its such a waste. Best voice ever but not reaching the masses for some reason. The lyrics in the songs he writes are brilliant but i think its time to steer away form acoustic based scores and 'Pop' it up a bit. Its been 5 years since I have seen D in the top ten on video hits. I know a song should not have to rely on the video to sell but these days it does matter. Change your media and marketing strategy, find out who in the radio station industry you have upset and then release a "best of" album. Make sure you hire a descent video production team and if they ask you to walk in your clip...sack them! Now I feel better

Of the Australian albums sold Now & Then is #2 and ROY: A Tribute to Roy Orbison is #15 Whilst I agree with Trilly, Brian and Stallinger to a large degree, I think the above posted by Braffy is relevant too. I was disappointed that it only got to #14 with Mother's Day sales included, but maybe we should be concentrating on the Australian charts. Now and Then is a great album, and the originals outshine the covers IMO... it is a pity that Damien is not seen to be the great artist we know he is by the critics and music industry. The national newspaper articles (full page in at least 3 states) were a bit too late for Mother's day sales, hopefully the album will go up next week.

You have to wonder what makes Sony tick. Here is a very beautiful album being once again totally ignored by them. The least they could have done was promote the single. Hope to see Damien on DWTS to promote Beautiful.
