Latest Australian Idol sensation Damien Leith rocked the ARIA #1 Chart Awards which were held at Doltone House, Sydney on February 22nd. The awards, which acknowledged the Australian artists who achieved a #1 in the Motorola ARIA Charts between the start of December 2005 and end of December 2006, saw Leith pick up two gongs – one for his #1 single ‘Night Of My Life’ and the other for his ‘The Winners Journey’ album.
A who’s who in the Australian music industry also got to witness Leith perform a stunning acoustic rendition of the track ‘Hallelujah’ while the alcohol flowed freely amongst guests. Other artists that picked up two awards each were Human Nature (for their ‘Reach Out – The Motown Record’ and ‘Dancing In The Streets’ albums) and Crowded House (for their ‘Dreaming – The Videos’ and ‘Farewell To The World’ DVDs).
Eskimo Joe were also popular on the day flying in just hours after performing at the WAMIs in Perth. After sitting next to someone with an embarrassing flatulence problem on their trip over, the group somehow managed to survive for their special acoustic performance of their track ‘New York’. They were also mighty chuffed after receiving an award for their #1 album ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’.
Other artists acknowledged on the day included Kate DeAraugo (‘Maybe Tonight’ single), Lee Harding (‘Wasabi’ single), TV Rock (‘Flaunt It’ single), Youth Group (‘Forever Young’ single), The Living End (‘State Of Emergency’ album), Hilltop Hoods (‘The Hard Road’ album), Something For Kate (‘Desert Lights’ album), Kasey Chambers (‘Carnival’ album), The 12th Man (‘Boned!’ album), Kylie Minogue (‘Showgirl – ‘The Greatest Hits Tour’ DVD) and John Farnham (‘John Farnham With The Sydney Symphony: Live From The Sydney Opera House' DVD).
Host James Mathison did well to fill in the gaps during the media conference while Jimmy Barnes was the talk of the day – not only with the upcoming Cold Chisel tribute album due at the end of March, but having open heart surgery on that same morning. According to his good buddy, 12th man satirist Billy Birmingham, the surgery was a success while his mates from the Living End, who have recorded a scorching rendition of ‘Rising Sun’ for the upcoming tribute, acknowledged that the man had the “heart of an ox”. Congratulations to all the winners.
