DAMIEN Leith is not like most musicians.
Instead of sleeping in after a late-night gig, the Australian Idol winner is booked on the first flight out of Melbourne to ensure he's on the starting line of the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.
"I'm actually flying straight in for the 9km that day," the singer said.
"I get the 6am flight … it's not too bad, I really wanted to do it and be involved. It's well worth doing the trip even if the time is slow."
Leith is running in the September 22 festival for the first time to raise money for Barnardos.
The father-of-three is also "thrilled" to be captaining the charity's 80-plus team.
Leith confessed his show in Melbourne the night before, scheduled to end after midnight, saved him from competing in the 42km marathon.
He's also not planning to break any personal running records on the day, admitting he'll be "shattered" but still enthusiastic.

Damien Leith, with wife Eileen, and their children Jarvis, 7, Jagger, 6 and Kiki, 2, preparing for the Running Festival.
"I've done lots of running over the years but this is the first time I've committed to this," Leith said.
"I'm ready to go. I had a sore ankle for a while but it seems to have gotten better.
"When I was training for the longer distance I was getting a sore ankle, but other than that I think it's all mended."
His wife Eileen and their children Jarvis, 7, Jagger, 6, and Kikki, 2, will be running in The Sunday Telegraph's 3.5km Family Fun Run and Leith said they were "all ready to go".
And thanks to his wife, he became involved with Barnardos.
"She actually used to work for Barnardos years ago … and we've always been associated with them because of her connection and then I suppose, becoming a father myself, you really appreciate more you know, how much you want kids to have a great upbringing and a great childhood and that's exactly what Barnardos goes out to improve," he said.
Entries are filling up fast with some start groups already full for the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.
